What do I need to fight Thargoids and how much time will it take me?

I know I need laser beam heat venting, and that takes like 200 hours to get if I remember correctly.

I can't remember all the other junk I need though. Was like Ax enhanced cannons or something.
I tried to figure this out many times, but just ended up flying around in circles till I uninstalled each time lol.

I don't even know if it is a lance or a krait now.

I have like 500hrs, nothing to show for it.

Not sure you’d need to spend 200 hours to get access to some basic beam laser engineering for long range and thermal vent…

… but if you plan to fight Interceptors, you need Guardian weapons. Which means visits to the Guardian sites for weapon blueprints and the various needed materials. Extra work for pre-engineered Guardian weapons which are a ‘purchase’ instead of straight unlock, requiring more materials, on top of the Mbooni system permit.

Or you spend a looong time fighting Basilisks and harder with the basic AX multicannons and/or missiles - enhanced versions of those can be freely purchased in rescue megaship locations however, including a gimballed AX multicannon. No unlock required.

(The other thing that is strongly recommended is engineering to however much you can get things to, preferably to the highest level. Which is probably more of a time hurdle than even the Guardian weapons.)

Brain is real small.

What do?
You named many things.
I appreciate help. It is hard to help me.

I got on for a bit. Change my character's hair color.
Asked what was good to do on the discord, didn't hear back, closed the game.
Not sure.

This is indeed the case for a classic Interceptor-hunting medium vessel; a serviceable Beam Laser with the Long Range modification and the Thermal Vent experimental effect can be acquired just from Dweller, one of the initial engineers you can meet. Everything else for such a vessel will indeed take a while to gather, though—and mind that lowering your heat is only useful if you are also drifting around the Interceptor, so you will need to be comfortable with disabling Flight assist!

If that is what you want, take a look at the Anti-xeno initiative Builds page; the unshielded Alliance Chieftain is a quite nice sturdy vessel for starting, and it has surprisingly strong rotation while moving at high speeds.

If you want more of a beginner approach which will at least show you what happens in such an encounter and that you can destroy the smallest of the Interceptors, I wrote a modest guide for it with pictures and video; take a look at Destroying your first Thargoid Cyclops with minimal equipment, upgrades, flying and effort. This uses the newer Enhanced AX multi-cannons, which are not so good long-term for destroying more than a Cyclops and will not help you to learn the classic methods for destroying Interceptors, but you will at least start to experience and understand the encounter, and also how simple it can be to make a vessel which does not explode just because a Cyclops attacked it for a while.

I restricted that Python to use almost no engineering, with only a little from Farseer and only for travel purposes, but by all means toughen the hull. If you want something you can adapt more easily to become a classic Interceptor-hunting vessel later, make it a Krait 2 instead of a Python!

I'd say if you want to fight Thargoids start with scouts and Scythes. I managed to solo one Interceptor back in the day and but it was a real struggle and not entry-level AX combat IMO. Get a ship with decent shields and armour, fit with enhanced AX multi-cannons and a long-range thermal vent laser, ECM and point defense and you should be able to take on a Scythe. No need for any Guardian stuff at all. You'll need a passenger cabin and passenger transport mission or an escape pod in cargo to tempt the Scythes to interdict you.

I mean, thermal vent beam is handy, but not mandatory.

Want to just dive straight in? Grab a reasonably fit combat ship, go to a rescue ship, s/normal weapons/AX weapons/g, slap on a xeno scanner and job done. You won't be batting down Hydras (or even basilisks)[1] or soloing evey AX CZ there is, but it's enough to start, and zero barrier to entry (save whatever passes for a combat ship for you, which probably looks like engineered HRPs or similar.

[1] Side-note: If we're calling "getting into AX combat" the same as "being able to take down every single AX threat out there"... then... well... lol.
