Horizons What do most Commanders do with multiple ships?

I've been jumping around system to system to build up a little bank of credits. I've got an A (best in class everything) fitted asp explorer as my main and only ship. When doing community goals I've stripped the explorer and bought and fitted out a ship that is good for the goal (like combat) selling the extra ship when goal is over. Do Commanders pick a system area and make a main base there so they can have an assortment of ships available? If so where is a good area? Thanks.

yes, i have several "bases" with several ships.

for exampel a starport at the edge of the bubble, where i have parked my exploration ships.

wath is a good place for you, is depending on what you want to do ingame.

if you are mining a lot, you might want to set up shop in a system with a pristine metallic ring.

if you like bounty hunting and enjoy flying several ships for that, you might set up home in a system with many RES.

also somehow important - to have a system or a system close by with good outfitting, if you want to change your loadout. and if you want to use discounts on outfitting, this in li young ruis space.

because i like to fly different ships and like to do different things ingame, also because i like to play with some player groups, which have their homesystem, i have 3 bases, and some small ships duplicated to all bases (like: having a courier and cobra everywhere).

I have all ships at Lembava/Diaguandri outfitted for whatever role I like. I also have a list to remind me what's what (sad I know). It's nice not to have to outfit/buy each time I just want to take a spin in a racing Eagle or a combat courier.

I also have a few FDL's/Vultures dotted around space since their range is low, one in each of the capitals of the 3 major powers and one up near Lave area. It means if CG's are on I can use an Anaconda or hauler or whatever to taxi over there and only have 5-10 jumps to anywhere I want to be :)

Also a backup taxi hauler or two at the starting system if I ever mess up so badly I don't have re-buy that I can get out of the starting system back to my stored ships down in Diaguandri.

Main fleet based between Diaguandri/shinrarta dezhra/Brestling. Explorer fleet in Sothis, the rest are small hubs dotted around with shuttles & combat ships

I only keep one ship at a time. Until we get a way to move stuff around (without flying it), that's the way I think works best for me.

I fly around in an ASP, similarly fitted as yours. If I want to trade, I sell the ASP, and buy me a Python. If I feel like combat, a Vulture. If I feel like just beings stupid and stirring trouble, a Cobra or a Viper...

And then when I'm done, I put the ASP back together.

I use my vette for pure combat, python as a mission runner/collector, conda for exploration, and fdl or fas when I'm in the mood for fast attack. Had many bases but really just jameson now. I hate looking for parts

I like small and medium ships. My DBX is parked in Tamar system I think, and is only used for exploration. Vulture is parked in Apam Napat where I do all my BH.
Most of the time I use my Viper or Cobra for short time exploration and scavenging/scouting.

I use a few Haulers to move around to get to all my ships. :)

I am in a player group based on one side of the bubble, and have another home system on the other side of the bubble, and park ships outfitted for various roles in those home systems. I buy and outfit them in a couple of the better Li-Yong Rui shipyards, where they are 15% cheaper. Saves a lot of credits on both purchase and insurance rebuy.

founders world is my main base simply because its a bit centralized and everything is available there. i have a fed corvet, orca, and a viper mk 4 currently im in the viper mk 4 flying around simply because my corvet isn't very viable any more and huge weapons are very gimped and not worth it.

i was going to say how i used to do it. hell why not. i was still building an FAS with the idea of trying a more combat oriented game - res sites and pure bounty hunting maybe, missions... that has cost me 56 mil and is half built at Borr. and i have gotten the Asp Explorer i wanted and kitted it out to do exploring when i want to go out the bubble, trading and missions and its armed enough for what used to be a nasty surprise to most pirates who interdicted me. i had to run from some wings, unless they were doable like two stock eagles and a cobra mk iii - or any anaconda with a pilot better than mostly harmless for example. but on the whole it was fun. i would have two ships and then later vague plans for a big ship like an anaconda or covette.

now? i dont fly. i have 2 rebuys for my asp. combat would be fun if the rewards for success covered repairs at least - but they dont. the fight is fun but you often dont claw back the repair cost with the bounty. i cant scan inhabited systems which have unexplored on everything any more because i get interdicted too much and spend too much time repairing becausee im fleeing 4 times out of 5 now and winning with damage the other 1. trading isnt making enough for repairs forcing me to consider missions plus trading which draws more interdictions. my FAS if i try to play now will be sold to cover rebuys, or simply because i am running low on repairs cash. this isnt an AI thing. i am sitting out and hating every minute until i see if the weapon fire rate thing with rails and pacs is a bug as people think or a mod nobody but npcs has access to.

short version 2.0 i used my asp to earn the money to make other ships. i WAS going to finish my FAS and try res sites and hazardous missions and combat play. 2.1 my asp looks very pretty at whatever engineer base im at now having looked at the mods and not being able ever to get them. my FAS i keep at Borr to remind me of when the game was fun and i could risk going into space because i had a chance of living through any encounter if i made the right choices in combat - rather than flee every combat (no fun so why bother playing) or pray i get heads every time with the coin toss when interdicted because if its tails you dont even get a chance to run before your ship is gone. hell you dont even get the weapons deployed before your shields are down.

I park them in different locations and then try to solve the problem of most time efficient access to a particular ship without messing up the rest of the lot.

It's the "7 Bridges of Königsberg" all over again.

When I first had the money to own more than one ship, I kept them at the same station as it was central to where I was "based".

Then after finding that selling ships to swap them cost me 10% of the ship value, I found it was more prudent to strip the chassis and keep the hull - selling or downgrading all the internals and coming back to the hull later when I needed it.

Over time, I then found I had a trade ship, mining ship, mission ship, combat ship and exporation ship; and I would leave them where I most used them. Mining ship parked at the nearest pristine ring. Trade ship close to where the best trade route was. I used the Exploration ship to travel between them.

Now I have the credits that mean I don't have to worry about it - I have all 29 ships. I am currently keeping them all (but four) at one location in Sol - but this is specifically for LaveCon and not for practical reasons.

I have a selection of ships at different locations.
My core fleet is at Shinrarta Dezhra, but I spend most of my time at Cubeo while doing Powerplay, and HIP 106213 while doing trading runs to pay for it all! My main ships are centred at Cubeo, ships that I don't use much now are stored at Founders World, and I keep a Courier, Imperial Eagle, Transport and Mining ship at Shinn City and LFT 9810. This gives me options for local combat, scouting and trade runs at the top of the bubble, the bottom and at locations within it. I tend to use a Cobra III to get between these locations speedily.

I use to use ships as bookmarks, leaving them equipped for the local area. So an FDL might be in a system with a haz res, my conda in one or the other trade route targets, with a throwaway like a sidy at the opposite end. Now with bookmarks added to the game, I have already sold some ship but others like the FDL and conda I am keeping at their previous locations.

While I happily buy and sell equipment if I want to change a build, I wont sell more expensive ships unless I have a pressing need to, no point taking the credit loss on selling a ship like the conda. Further if I am going to sell a larger ship, all the equipment is stripped and sold separately first.

I think the Asp is the best all-round ship to do all the various mindless activities that will unlock the engineers' upgrades. So far in 2.1, I've used one for HI RES farming, exploring, nav beacon farming, prospecting on planets, dropping in to every USS and doing various delivery and collection missions. I haven't been killed once yet. If I were OP, I'd hang on to the Asp until after all mods are unlocked.

This is my survivable Asp:
