What do you listen to when playing?

I'm on my 3rd run of the entirety of a TV show called Mock The Week (I'm a UK dweller) and will eventually go back to a podcast I know and like afterwards, I'm just curious as to what other people listen to whether it's music/podcasts/TV shows or whatever else

I guess this post also serves as a point for recommendations too because I'm slowly running out of stuff (bonus points if it's pro-trans or pro-LGBTQ+)

I am mostly playing together with a friend, therefore no music in the background. When I am alone, I love listening to ambient space music or an eclectic collection of 70's space rock (Hawkwind and the likes). David Bowie is of course always a good choice ;)

For a while I had recordings of various dawn chorus (birdsong) playing along with the games sound, now I just have the game sound.

I wouldn't want anything that distracted me from the game.

I usually listen to my favorite 80s radio station when playing. If not, I have a few things I like to listen to - mostly soundtracks:

  • This first one is a bit blasphemous as it's a "SC station", but I like "Space Travel Radio". Basically ambient chillout music.
  • Quite some time ago I stumbled across a very good video game soundtrack mix called "Space Travel Music Vol. 1" on YT. It's a 2 hour mix of Deus Ex, Mass Effect and the Oblivion soundtrack. Basically a "best of" of the stuff I like to listen to (see below).
  • Speaking of games, the soundtracks of both newer Deus Ex games are brilliant to listen to, as is the Mass Effect Trilogy soundtrack mentioned above. Another game soundtrack I like to listen to is Prey. You can find all of them easily on YT.
  • I have a few movie soundtracks I like to listen to - both Blade Runners, and Oblivion are great and relaxing to listen to.

That's about it.

Mostly the in-game music. But I put together a little filk playlist for when I decide to go exploring (of course its the OG lo-fi stuff home recorded on cassettes in 1980-s):

I've also a bluegrass set for fighting in conflict zones, but it's local, not on YT.

The sound of explosions. Mm. Yes. Soothing.

Oh you mean something like youtube or spotify or podcasts or what have you? [cough] yes sure all of those. Obviously.

At the moment I'm watching Junk Yard Digs. Mostly endless cranking noises peppered with backfires.

Edit: yes, watching, foolishly. More exclusion zone collisions than one might hope.

I have Adrian Tchaikovsky, Iain M Banks and similar on talking books.
Hawkwind is a definite!
The Elite music itself is very good.
Bbc sounds is superb for radio comedy and drama, loved Danny Robins’ uncanny series.
Hawkwind though! Yes!

I used to have Star Trek movies playing on the TV in the background. I can't see the TV from my PC but Star Trek movies are something you can just listen to as they're less visually demanding than other sci-fi. At the moment though I've switched to videos on YouTube from The Why Files 🙂

Eve online music (never played it) Space Engine music, Imperium Galactica II music and a few other bits I've found on youtube
