What do you 'realistically' require for release in 4 months?

I would not worry. This is a pretty polished beta compared to others I've been in. All things considering I would also rather it be delayed than released with major bugs.

Its not so much the bugs and quality of what we've got that I'm worried about, its the stuff we havent got yet that concerns me.

I'm guessing theres still lots of stuff we havent got and alot of what we got placeholder atm.

This.

And i realy hope that Frontier will release propper Elite and not an unfinished one. TBH : If they realy want to release 1.0 this year, then there is alot stuff missing. Maybe they will release much more content in the next weeks/month then in the past, but i cant imagine this.

To believe that FD had much more stuff ready/nearly ready and they just dont talking about it/showing it is pretty naiv in my humble opinion.

Have a look at this video published on 1 Jan 2013 and from the timestamp above you can see what looks like the FerDeLance (at least I hope it is as its mean looking) and a textured Anaconda with cammos, plus some animation or possibly even in game footage (including the Viper).

I know that I can texture something like a Cobra or that FerDeLance model in around 20 hours using say 15 layers for various things like panel lines, dirt, weathering, alpha maps, bump maps etc. (and I'm not that fast as its not my day job-I do texturing occasionally for fun). The 25 ships needed at launch will likely have been done long ago, with maybe some subsequent tweaks added if the model changes or new graphics engine features need implementing on it.

So I still believe that there is an awful lot that is done and ready, which we haven't seen yet, nor are we likely to until release (some probably not even then, as it will be proof of concept stuff for planetary landings etc.).

I m pretty sure that Frontier can deliver everything they have promised I would be surprised and inspired if they do it completely flawlessly as it is they seem to be streets ahead of nearly every other software house in demonstrating how to run a project.

I think the netcode will be an ongoing problem I haven't come across a online game that doesn't suffer in that regard. We might just have to wait for better hardware availability and standards to truly nail that one.

It should be noted I can t point to any real objective evidence to my opinion other than they ve done ok so far carry on the trend

Heh, I thought that "streets ahead" thing was something the writers of Community came up with for Chevy Chase's character to say. Or is it, and people have picked it up?

Another thought I had, Are we going to be testing every single thing. Maybe some of the content is being held back to be released at release so theres still surprises left.

We dont need to test every little thing, At this moment all we are probably helping to match making and servers, many difference PC configs, in a real world worldwide environment which FD couldnt really do by themselves. And then helping with balance, minor bugs and feedback.

Wemight never get to fly a fer de lance til release day and stuff like that.

What do you want from a game?
Oh, not much, just 400 billion star systems for me to explore...

It's not like they are coding 400 Billion different star systems, they are being proceduraly generated with the exception of the core systems. I know FD said they are saving a few systems that we will not be able to jump to so they can build them up for later expansions.
However for a bulk of the systems I believe it will be something like:

First Person Jumps to system -> system generated randomly from a set algorithm -> random system is not stored in server's memory -> Others now see the same thing.

So 400 systems isn't as unrealistic as it could be, I mean they already have the star map, and thats all the work they really needed to to with that part aside from programming in the system generation algorithm.

They have been mapping the galaxy for as long as they were able to count the stars which has progressed for hundreds even thousands of years. Fairly recently we now have this

In game, I was surprised! I don't expect to have 400 billion but checking the galaxy map, there are stars out there! phew! I tried to find the center black hole. I could hear me clicking on systems but I couldn't see anything for my screen was white. heh.

I feel this topic isn't as important as say having a better Comms. People have to communicate. In game. I understand the design but this is almost a must.

I was docking on approach but suddenly the 9 came into view. Im sure it was always there on my approach but the graphic didnt pop up until I was already into the gate. I quickly turned and squeeze by at last second. The Cmdr sent me a message "That was close! :) "

The first issue was I didnt see the msg, hear or realize something was coming in. I was docking and by the time I did, It was several minutes even maybe 5 minutes passed the time it was sent. I see the menus that pop up on a selection. Send txt etc.. Pretty straight forward. But that Cmdr was gone. I had no idea how to respond.

There are many thoughts about Comms running through my head. But one I always come back to and I believe it may be taxing to utilize. An all voice Comms system. Leap of faith here. heh

Allow players to have a open vent type channel in system. Something you would have to call and connect too. Perhaps the station's channel. The instances are limited to a certain amount of players so there wouldn't be tons connecting. I can foresee bandwidth issues.

Have a transmit button integrated into a custom key to where once you target, you can transmit.

Allow squads to be formed and all of them can connect and chat.

Its cool to ponder it. But I really do believe Comms needs work. Perhaps throwing it up on Main Window HUD right in front of you when you activate it. A better sound when someone contacts you.

I really want to see customization of all the cockpit's windows transparent background opacity.

Despite as painful it sounds, (and as far as my experience in beta testing several games in the past 2 decade), this game won't be anywhere to be ready to be released 4 months from now (forget about before Dec, that's definite).
My funny bone says March 2015 , the earliest.
Otherwise we got a game, where you haul cargo between stations and getting occasionally pulled out of hyper drive by either a police or a pirate.

Of course, we can do this with 25 different ships and spread across 400 billion stars, but the result is the same. Ship soil enrichment stuff to the most isolated agricultural system and bring back some coffee to the high tech factory.
You can also go shoot pirates if you want to or steal cargo and off a particular faction.
We aren't game testing anything else, and it's the middle of August as I write this.
All the other functions and options I keep hearing about sounds like 3/4 of the game and there is no way to both playtest - and fix whatever broken within 4 months. I mean, it can be done, but it's gonna be a mess, even if it's released on Dec 31st.
Call me a pessimist or lacking faith, but no matter how hard I'm trying to process this logically, there are only 2 options I can come with, if I'm reasonable:

1. The game will be delayed until 1st or 2nd Quarter of next year (or even later).
2. The game that's being released is pretty much what we got now as playing goes. Ok, maybe 15 more ships, thousands more systems and a few more upgrades to buy, but in the essence, it'll be what it is right now.

Of course, there is that chance, that the next update will be huge and we'll be flooded with the sea of options and extra features, that we couldn't believe was available but kept away from us to see. You may sense a little sarcasm coming from that, but I'm just trying to be reasonable and realistic.

I'd actually be OK with that, as long as there aren't anymore wipes. The other goodies can trickle in at their own pace seing as I'll be playing this game for the rest of my life anyway.

I pretty much agree with this guy. Don't get me wrong, I am going to enjoy seeing how far this game comes but even as it is it still feels like a more complete product than some of the full release titles out these days. That'd just be a starting point, and then we can go from there.

I think with the start of gamma we will see:

-More implementation of the Interdiction/Supercruise
-Traveling NPC doing trade and there buisness ,not just spawning at a station, more a "lifecycle"

-Additional content for for the missionboard.
-Maybe first time access to imperial systems.
-Two ot three more ships.
-Mining
-fleshing out the grouping system and hopefully slaveing systems

At that point most of its keycomponents are then in the game, rest will be added over gamma or if nessesary after release.

I wouldnt be suprised if we only reach all ships when the other expansions are out.

Aslong the game becomes a game, and it certainyl looks that way to me with the "contentjumps" we get with each bigger update. I am rather optimistic.

The biggest point is the nature of sandbox games, that helps keeping developing time down. The more procedual the less longterm work you ahve to do and only creating some details ect.
