What does "double engineered" refer to?

I've seen this in a few threads recently but it's meaning is lost on me. As far as I can tell it just means it's an engineered mod with a special on it???

Is that it?

Scroll down to Engineered FSD V1
  • I don't think this mentions only class 5 FSD are available.
  • For my exploration ships AspX, DBX, Orca it added approx 5LY to the range.
  • The improved range is a multiplier, so not much jump range improvement for ships starting off with low range.
  • You can add an engineered special effect (Mass Mgr) on top of it.
  • There are other double engineered items available from CGs that will likely become available in similar way.
  • INARA shows it as a regular engineered FSD. Coriolis and EDDY aren't updated with it yet.

Double engineered means it has 2 regular mods on it - normally you have to choose one. You can also add a experimental on top (or change the existing one if it had one) for extra lols.
The special double engineered modules usually have at least one fairly niche (borderline useless) mod on them.
The exception was the FSD which has both range extending mods (range and fast boot) - and you can add mass manager on top.
Wiping the module and re-engineering it loses both effects and starts from scratch. You can't add the two back again.

Double engineered "things" I can remember:
Seeker missile rack (2/5)
FSD (4.5/5)
DSS (5/5)
3A Shield (1.5/5)
3A Powerplant (4/5)
Point def (1/5)

There may be one or two others...

Cmdr Vincent Serra, I agree with you in everything except 3A Powerplant. In which ship and which role you use it, when you are so satisfied?
For me it's something like 3/5, ok, but not big difference.

I'd say that the PP has a niche where you can undersize but still get the power output of a larger PP.
Both engie effects increase power and with thermal spread exp you don't get too much of a hit to efficiency due to armoured. It's a bit heavier than standard (IIRC), but on the whole, I'd probably be able to find a use for it - unlike the shield or PD.
My ratings are more about the combination of effects are are purely subjective on my part. YMMV. :)

Thanks for explaining that 👍
