What feature are you most hoping for in 2.4......and why?

Rare, but permanent POI's to be found while exploring. Mining sites, salvage sites, more ruins (human/non-human alike), giant ship wreckage...
 
Cheese.

Rare Cheese.

Rare Cheese to buy and sell and from which to make profits.

Beyond Cheese, the things I most look forward to seeing:

1. Atmospheric planetary landings.
2. Earthlike planetary landings.
3. Waterworld planetary landings.
4. Flying around and fighting in Gas Giant atmospheres.
5. Getting up out of my chair and walking around.
6. Seeing a non-hostile alien life-form.
7. Mining a planet's surface that does not involve shooting random chunks of rock.
 
Lots of good suggestions here.

I'd throw my wish into the improved BGS/PowerPlay. I really want to get invested in a system or a power and have some fun. Coupled with this would be an improvement of the mission system. Like so much in this game missions are just hollow with a coat of RNG paint on them.

I would feel bad not mentioning exploration too! Such a huge awesome looking galaxy with no real reason to see it. I would love if they added some type of planet survey scanning meta where you land (or fly low enough) on a planet and discover geological features (mineral seams, gas wells, giant lakes, etc.) that you could scan and sell data from. Extraction systems pay more for minerals, tourism for wondrous sites, or what have you. Add a bonus in credits/rep or something more interesting depending on the formations distance from the system you sell the scan data too.
 
Have to say I'm liking the sound of the very large ships they're hinting at.

Assuming it's not something massive like atmospheric worlds or space legs then:

1) Thargoid invasion
2) Orrery View!!!!!!
3) SRV racing.

I'd like an Open mode with rules to promote live player interaction and socialization without arriving in a populated system and getting attacked just because it floats the boat for some players. Sure participating in Power Play or a Community Goal is a different story and attacks are part of the game. Being wanted in Open with a bounty also counts. But being clean with no cargo then dealing with unreasonable interdictions going to a populated system just to meet 'n greet has made some dedicated Open players give up going to Groups looking for friendships and even Solo while others will never venture into Open. Heck the NPCs have rules per these engagements that live players should adopt! Then the PvP players post on the Forum trying to get others to join in their fun. I feel for them and totally agree with the good guy PvPers!

More features and additions as the priority with 2.4 is not going to help a lot. Having an Open mode with rules would definitely float my boat and would possibly make this game the best MMO ever conceived! Sure one can play Open in the boonies without any issues but that changes dramatically in populated systems and currently with engineer systems waiting for someone foolish enough to show up in Open play. For now it is a shoot festival if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Let's work on fixing this. Then we will have a lot more fun with all the new ships, toys and BGS FD will provide in the future.

Meanwhile where is my Panther Clipper! Enough already and let's get with the program! It is not a complete Elite without a PC and those awesome rotating engine nacelles! :)

Develop on core game mechanics for mining, trading, exploration. and smuggling.

I know this is not going to happen though because this community and FD seem to be very happy with gameboy gameplay.

This! indeed right now i would take a fully fledged fleshed out npc update, crew, wings, missions with all the roll playing this would entail over atmospherics and space legs combined.

Whilst it seems FD have them on the list, but at a seemingly v low priority, i can only hope the more people who ask for it in discussions like this the more likely FD are to think it is important enough to up the priority.

NPC CREW Fdev released a brochure in 2014 where it was described.

However that was when they asked for money to get the game started, so that probably changed like a lot of other things.
 
Complete exploration overhaul based on the 10000+ great ideas since 2014.
Engineers complete rethink that allows for only 3 engineered pieces on a ship at any given time (swappable).
Fix (if required), but bring back deleted mission types.
1000+ missions at any time on large pop stations.
Make the NPC/engineer ugly mugs optional to view.
In game controls for HUD customization.
Orrery map.
Manual waypoint plotting.
