But i fear that there can be problems with copyright and/or licenses for fonts. It's more likely that we see a special Elite Font created from Frontier or some fonts that we already see within the game [ugh]

Lucida Console

I'm not against this, but all the monospace fonts kinda belong on a screen or in the UI.
OCR A, Courier New, Lucida Console, and Source Code Pro are all cool in their place, but I don't think they've got enough "pow!" for the hull.

Should be the same as the rest of the fonts in the UI .. whatever that is.
Otherwise it will look out of place.
Sure but Hull Text will be a for-purchase option, and that font (while probably decided) is worth debating.

Wingdings
Some people just want to watch the world burn.

These are the questions that apparently keep some Cmdrs up and awake at night.
They are. Good design requires some effort:

Comic Serif (the original, not the other one) http://robmientjes.nl/2012/item/comic-serif
I did not know this existed. Thanks, but uh it's not very loveable.
I still feel the same way about Comic Sans, in spite of they joy it brings to some: http://bit.ly/29grhwa

You're Empire aren't you.

Sure - For example Futura which is an elegant and useful font costs like $700 AU for a proper license.
I've got a "sorta version" but the kerning is munged.

But with licensing at some level "It's just money" You're already paying for good design. Why pay for the work to reinvent the wheel when you can buy the right to use an existing asset?

Great thread, well constructed.

For reference, is Eurostile bold extended the font already used on ships in Elite ?

Because it's the one I want to use !

That's Eurostile - like I say - nothing reads more like the future than Eurostile.
It's kinda everywhere in Sci Fi. But the All Caps thing - I dunno, as a default - fine but Empire commanders for sure would want some heavy metal. At least some ümlaüts.
The more I think about it, I'm inclined to fonts per manufacturer.
Lakon ships kinda want a stencil. Their current logo looks kinda Meh.

Core Dynamics should get Eurostile. That's basically what they've got now but in italics with angled chop backs. Which is basically a trope from rule number three of "How to make your type look futuristic" https://typesetinthefuture.com/2016/02/18/futuristic/

Gutamaya maybe Copperplate Gothic or something more metal.
The current one is in keeping with how I perceive Gutamaya, but doesn't fit with how the Empire CMDRs see themselves. Needs to rock out a bit more.

And Saud Kruger something elegant like Futura.

The De Lacy logo looks so much like Papyrus in a suit that I can't bring myself.

Would love the GTA font, and call my ship WASTED!

More realistically, something that keeps its legibility at a reasonable distance, so nothing too fancy, although we probably won't be able to read ship names (on hulls) anyway until fairly close.

Then there is always this:

Or perhaps more relevant...

I hope we get a choice of fonts. I wouldn't want to write

"The Pretty Little Petal"

in the same font as

"Bludgeon"

I think that they should stick with Eurostile caps as used in game currently. It would be consistant and futuristic looking.

The extended version that you use in your sig isn't actually very eurostile. It's very much more like Microgamma extended which is the font used on star trek ship registrations (not the main large saucer one as that was a custom font) since the motion picture. Thats thefont that I used on our fuel rats honour badge logo and looks instantly futuristic. I guess when Eurostile gets 'extendend it loses its boxy feel.

On another note, I know they said ship names are coming but does it mean on the hull or just on the HUD? I don't recall seeing it mentioned that they would be actually on the ship graphics?

If you're gonna poll on such a detail, might as well overhaul the whole UI. To me, it's way too big, hardly legible in a split second ('cause too big), nothing stands out 'cause it's all written the same, takes too much room for not enough information. The ship name is one tip of the iceberg.

Oh, and none of those fonts :D

I think I read elsewhere that we'll be able to buy vanity plates, presumably so our ship name is visible on the hull rather than just via a scan. Might be wrong though.

No. Don't.

You might not realise this, but Frontier can't allow custom fonts because some fonts are actually copyrighted. It's the same reason that Frontier (in the early days at least, maybe not so much now) wouldn't allow certain commander names for copyright reasons*. Frontier have to be 100% sure they won't have legal action against them. Yeah, I know that's sad, but that is the modern world we live in.

EDIT: * On reflection I am amazed they allowed my commander name, but I had been using it on the forum for 6 years at that point.

Licensing fonts isn't that hard, though, so it wouldn't be a huge barrier.
