What guns should I upgrade?

Just wondering what guns people are upgrading and why.

I feel like all my guns plain suck at the minute. I can't remember any of their names off the top of my head, but I think I probably have them all (or at least the most common ones).

Can't decide if plasma is the way to go, or if I should mix and match and upgrade say my laser rifle and a kinetic pistol.

Thanks, o7.

Weapon Damage scales geometrically by 1.31 (3^0.25) per grade (G1: 1, G2: 1.31, G3 1.73 , G4 2.28, G5 3 times the damage).
First thing therefore is to get a G3 from a shop. And maybe some G2 or G3 with mods to see if it makes a difference.
Then try them and engineer later what you find suits you and helps the respective weapon or your gameplay.

Depends which one suits your gameplay.

It took me ages to get to grip with the Intimidator (plasma shotgun), but I really like it now.

My daily carry is the Zenith/C-44 on my main. Executioner/Tormentor on my Alt.

+1 on the Intimidator.
I usually sneak up behind a scavenger and blast him away with 2 shots at most (1 if he doesn't have his shields up).
Rinse and repeat.

I have so far - faster reload and mag size mods on.
On G4 it's powerful and you don't have to switch your weapons mid fight.

EDIT: I found it as an unmodified G3 at a vendor and at this grade already it was pretty powerful.

Thankfully, foot combat isn't like ship combat and so there aren't any OP options so my best advice is to buy all the weapons at G1, go to a low intensity CZ in your ship, park your SRV somewhere close but hidden away, try all the weapons and keep going back to your SRV to change loadouts.

Once you've got a loadout you like the most, upgrade it.

If you'd like guidance on any of that (like how to get to a low CZ and how to repeat it infinitely, rather than do the whole Frontline Solutions loop) then shout up.

I found G1 not very helpful with some weapons. Things definitively change a lot with grade. It's a big gap from one-shotting to two-shotting.

LOL, weird to see this phrase in a game context rather than a conceal carry context.
My EDC (every day carry for those who don't know the acronym).

I found a g5 Tormentor to be a great problem solver. Especially since it came noise suppressed when I bought it. I did g5 an Oppressor and while it may look like it does only do half the damage of the specialist weapons, 75 shots expanded magazine and a stability mod to basically nullify recoil makes it pleasant to use. Leaves room in my Dominator for a rocket launcher.

I strongly suggest trying the AR-50 - up at G5 I can practically ignore the shield resistances for all but the highest level of NPCs and literally shred them with their shields down without the use of any Engineering mods. It's highly consistent with low recoil, a decent projectile velocity of around 180 m/s and a good magazine size of 40 rounds; its only downside is the limited ammo pool of 240 rounds that seemingly go quickly with a 600 RPM rate of fire.

Pair the AR-50 with another primary of your choice (the Aphelion, Executioner and L-6 rocket launcher are all good options) and the Tormentor as your sidearm and you're good to go.

Avoid the Oppressor plasma rifle for the moment. It has an abysmal projectile velocity of ~75 m/s that is only workable in close range engagements on stationary targets. While the damage is good, it is highly inconsistent due to the aforementioned velocity issues and will land you in trouble as you cannot hit targets that utilize the "A" and "D" keys. Also, you cannot correct the velocity through the Greater Range mod, so until FDev adjust the Oppressor, it's stuck competing with the SMGs / shotgun and losing horribly.

They do but it doesn't require G2+ to understand what you like to use or not. Low intensity CZs with a dominator and three G1 weapons is ample for a bit of fun and learning how to play. You do not need to upgrade first. I didn't in alpha. I'd very quickly worked out what weapons I did and didn't like by just buying them and trying them and low intensity is the best place to do it for a number of reasons:

  • You have AI team mates - stick close to them if you are still learning and you won't get overwhelmed by the opponents
  • The opponents are squishy
  • The opponents do not pack a lot of heat and won't kill you quickly 1v1
  • Dying isn't a big deal. You die, you just respawn. You can also use that moment to switch to another weapon loadout to try next
  • It's fun
  • You can do it for as long as you like
  • It actually pays pretty well and you get mercenary ranking for it

Aphelion (already at G5), has stability and magazine cap, gets scope and headshot or stowed reloading
Intimidator (G3), will up to G5 and then add magazine, both silencers and whatever last, propably also stowed reloading
Karma P15 (G2), hopefully get a G3 anytime and add all that I like.

The Aphelion at G5 is a beast.

Thanks for all the info guys, really helpful :)

I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for higher grade weapons in Pioneer Supplies! I didn't know that was a thing (just saw G1 everywhere so far).
