I also backed in the Betas (SB 1 for me) and I never got in on the "trade in rares" bonanza or "infinitely paying asteroids" things, so I'm only in a somewhat upgraded Cobra by now and have maybe 100k.
What happened to the user protection we were supposed to get??

A CMDR killing you once for whatever reason is not griefing and is within what would be acceptable in any online game. A CMDR killikg you every time you exit the station even when you have nothing to your name but a free sidewinder and 27 credits, yes, that'd be a problem. Hasn't happened AFAIK, though.
The galaxy is DANGEROUS. Like, you know, the title of the game? There IS a protection mechanism it has two parts:
a) Unless you change it, crimes against you will be reported, and the player will have a bounty with the Pilot's Federation. And thus, is fair game to anyone. Even you.
b) If you manage to survive 3-5 minutes (or even less, if you have good local standing), 2 to 5 system security vessels will come to aid you. Usually Vipers and Eagles, although I've seen an occasional Cobra, and enven a Python once (Might have been a stray NPC, though).
I'd give you the standard advice: "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose." But you clearly can afford the insurance bill. And being a Hauler the bill must have been a pittance.
As it's been said before, smoking someone in seconds can be easily done for around 200K. Anyone with a sidewinder and a bit of intelligence can get a ship like that in the firsst six hours of playing.

I was interdicted and killed by a CMDR earlier today. Took me out as I was collecting fuel before jumping out of an empty system. I'm not wanted, got no cargo, there was no scan, no comms - just shot me down dead. Nothing my barely upgraded sidey could do to get away or hit back against overwhelming firepower. I didn't even take a note of his name. Being it was in deep space I doubt he'll even get a bounty for it, just the "lolz."
To be honest, the insurance was nothing, it was nothing more to me than a minor inconvenience. And one experience like that so far is hardly ruining the game for me. If it gets worse and it ends up that we can't go anywhere without being interdicted and destroyed then I'll switch to solo or a PvE group. But I'm happy continuing in open at the moment as I've had some good comms experiences with other commanders too.

Think of it that way and you'll be less peed off by it.

Hmm, I've been playing in open since I started two days after launch. Sure, I've gotten interdicted by players a few times, but not often. And I've yet to be killed by any. Then again, on day one, I put some good distance between myself and the starter system. I'm guessing most of the big fish that prey on rank beginners, do so in a 20LY radius of the starter systems. Where the small fish are aplenty and dinner is served.
I'm just about 70-80LY 'down' from Sol, in the borderlands between the Feds and Imps. I see maybe two or three players in a given session (typical 3-4 hours of playing). That is fine. If they leave me alone, I leave them alone. And if they do interdict me, my Cobra is not only tough, it also got a vicious bite.

Firstly most of us are not preying on new players!, some of us are actually protecting them! Search for the white knight thread.
I will personally get blown to bits protecting a new player if need be (I've not yet seen any trouble like that).

Secondly regarding the few weeks head start we had, big deal!, what do you think new players will be dealing with in 3,6, 12 mths etc when the current players have armed up? Same scenario as you are in now, & the same in any game where you can build up your kit!

You're right they are childish to do that, but by the sounds of it, it's the 1st time its happened to you.
If you don't want that small risk of it happening again before you've built up cash then migrate out to more remote systems or play solo for now.

Another person making sweeping generalisations!
1. Not all of us made 100s of millions! (I made 1.1 mill from it).
2. It wasn't abuse as it was part of the game! Your only whining because you didn't get to do it!
3. Once you know the trade routes, it is easy to make money, just not as fast
4. I fly in a Cobra as do some other beta players, and so what if others fly big ships?, it's part of the game!
5. No we aren't all pirates you idiot! But anyhow that's part of the game. Plus what tim suffered from wasn't pirating but just plain destruction, completely pointless I agree!
6. Solo mode isn't the only option, flying further out means you could to the competition & be largely safe. Anyhow if you haven't already started for the competition I would say it's too late now.
7. I'm not saying he's crying about it all, his complaint about being pointlessly being blown up with no request for cargo is valid as it's not in the spirit of the game.
He is just 'crying' though about gamma accounts not being wiped!
