I just died, because I had to react immediately to a IRL situation. Unfortunately I don't have cash now to rebuy my ship.. need and additional 2256Cr :(. What happens if I can't rebuy my old ship back? Will I have lost... everything?

Yes, you'll lose the ship if you opt for the Sidewinder. But you'll be offered insurance should you not have enough to cover the insurance premium, it comes out of your earnings.. I think 10% until it's paid off.
Up to 200k I believe... it they haven't changed it.

yes, you will

I will be better off just wiping all progress and restart with a Cobra Mk3 again. But all the progress from then... lost. I think I qill just quit completely. :( maybe one day I will start playing again, in some months then.

Insurance covers something like 98% of your ship and components. You HAVE to pay the remaining 2%.

As mentioned above, you can forgo covering your components and just pay for the hull, but if that is also out of reach you walk away empty handed.

There is currently nothing that you can do in this situation.

Edit: Forgot to mention the loan as posted above. When you reach a certain point in the game, 200k is as helpful as 50cents off your car loan amount.

On the right panel just under your current balance you'll see your ship's rebuy cost so that you'll never have to fly something you can't afford to replace. :)

Never let your balance drop below the rebuy cost unless you're happy with a sidewinder. Might need to take less product or even fly with an open hold, but that's better than what happened to you.

This happened to me in beta, I was allowed a loan of up to 200k. As above posted, the loan is paid off by skimming 10% off any money you receive. Not sure if it has changed any.

There is also the option (if cost is above loan limit or you avoid debt for RP reasons) to select which modules you want to buy back. You could leave off expensive weapons or upgraded thrusters for example.

You only lose your cargo and any insurance, or your ship if it is not insured. You don't actually die you keep all your progress and credits.
Wiping your save is the only way to die and start again at the moment.

yeah... it's just that I had a Federal fine of 194K that I got when I was a noob and picked up a lot of lucky paladium floating at a wreckage. Not realizing/checking that it was stolen, I got scanned by feds while trying to dock. I got away but got so scared by it that I accidentally pressed the END button ejecting it all, meaning I couldn't even sell it somewhere else. And now, that came to bite me in the butt real hard. The bad way. For some reason I have to pay fine when I die if I want to use the insurance. I wasn't really counting on that one. I mean, I didn't know that I had bought my insurance from a Fed insurance company.

Your rep should stay the same, even if you start off with a new sidewinder.
The game mechanics shouldn't throw you back to rookie status though. If this game would be well balanced, anyone who has lost their ship and wealth could get back on their feet a lot faster, due to missions given by the space stations, based on his/her stats.

If you wipe, you gonna be rookie again!

I think we've probably all done it at one time or another... flown dirty and then Murphy stepped in and BOOM... we lost it all.

Have they removed the loan system? I thought that was pretty good.

What? they removed the loan system? Would someone please confirm this?

actually...since premium beta not a single time for me ;)
oh, i lost a lot of ships (actually no insurance agent with a sane mind would even talk to me)... but in the beginning (when there werent any modules) i went by the rule: "don't buy a ship if you don't have at least three times the money". And i kept to that up to the Anaconda ;)
