What have your experiences with VR been and what are good VR games I should check out?

I’ve been window shopping for VR, primarily for Elite: Dangerous, but I don’t want to spend that kind of money for one game. If it’s too cumbersome and inconvenient, it might end up collecting dust. A game like Elite requires a lot of time, and it would be easier jumping off my computer chair when I’m not wearing a headset that blocks everything else out.

What about other games that are good for VR, that would make it worthwhile getting a headset?

If you are into horror and you are resistant to motion sickness, maybe Resident Evil 7? Didn't try it myself but maybe will.

For the ghosttrain rollercoaster experience: Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. I played this one. I think it's quite fun, and had some good scares. My wife was screaming several times. I was afraid neighbours would be going to call the police :p
I tried playing Alien Isolation with the Trinus emulator. It works - could be really great with true VR support, but it's not bad if you already own it.

Upcoming: Ace Combat 7

Some suggested DCS World (DCS stands for Digital Combat Simulator) - a combat flight sim.

If you are into racing... there are some titels out there, VR Driving Club, Redout, ...

I didn't try but I'd be curious what others think about Riggs and Farpoint on the shooter action side of things.

Also there is Skyrim coming to VR...

And Subnautica also supports VR.

My general experience with the playstation VR is ... well... good enough. The trinus PSVR emulator (PC download about 10 Euro) let's you play Steam VR games. But I hope Oculus or Vive do a better job. PSVR on PC is a mere crutch.

This away. Many games for PSVR are a bit short - never the less an experience (Batman, Fated: the silent oath, The Silent Hours, ...) - also it can take a bit of getting used to the VR. Feelings of motion sickness might ruin some of the first moments. I was good with vehicle and flight games. I enjoy EVE-Valkyrie in VR - but I nearly puked with "Here thy Lie" which is a "walking game".

Also I can tell that reading text is an issue for some VR-titles. The resolution can get blurry or the text is to close to your eyes ... reading in VR generally can get a bit straining.

Also beware, since I write about Playstation VR, don't think you can play Elite Dangerous on PS4 with VR - you can't !!!!!

E:D is actually among (if not) the best VR games around.

It's literally breathtaking.

In VR, E:D is an experience. Fortunately, it also has a large, complex and rewarding game attached. I know of no other games that can really draw you in. Redout: Enhanced is a blinding little sci-fi racer though.

I haven't tried VR (properly, anyway), but I've watched plenty of YouTube vids. These seem to be the most popular that I can remember for now:

Elite: Dangerous
Project Cars
Assetto Corsa
DCS World
War Thunder
Pool (can't remember which one)
Dreadhalls
Face Your Fears
The Chair
Alien Isolation (not officially vr supported, but works in vr)
Stand Out

There's loads more titles that I can't think of, right now.

If you're not that bothered about room scale and moving around in the environment, there are plenty of flight/racing games as listed at the beginning.

I'm an avid VR gamer. I pre-ordered the first Oculus CV1 and then got the Touch as soon as that came out. I use a third sensor for room scale.

Elite is great in VR, however I do recommend that you have a top notch PC for pushing your graphics up and maintaining frame rates in the SRV. I'm running a 1080Ti and 7700K i7.

I switch back and forth between TrackIr and Monitor and VR in Elite based on what I'm doing. If I'm playing in OPEN or with others in a PG, I will usually run monitor so that it's easier to interact with the chat window. If I'm jut going to do a specifc task for that play session like combat or mission running or exploring an alien site, I'll use VR. The sense of scale and immersion is awesome. I don't really enjoy navigation in the galaxy map because the design is for monitor and the alignments are off and searching is a hassle, but it's usable. Switching between VR and MOnitor is not that userfriendly. Dr Kaii has a good launcher, but FD should really make this an option in the official launcher.

Other VR games

Something nice is that the Oculus store does have sales that occur around the same seasonal sales as Steam. That's when I usually grab the games I've been following.

For shooters Robo Recall and Arktika1 are the top of the pile. Both are fun, quick to jump in jump out and are highly polished. I also really like The Unspoken, which is constantly updated and just got a single player DLC for free. Superhot VR is a must and also a great one to show people.

For adventure and story Lone Echo is incredible and will give you those moments where you just lift the headset and exhale as you come back to reality. Another awesome one is Mages Tale, which feels like you are in a game of D&D. I really liked that. I've just picked up The Gallery episodes 1 and 2 and am inpressed so far.

Flight Sims. I like Ultrawings. It's like the old Pilotwings of N64 days. I'm also into Il-2 Sturmovic, which just got a VR update. I'm also looking forward to Ace Combat. There is talk of the next Mech Warrior being VR supported, which would be awesome.

A new MMO is getting a lot of buzz. Orbus VR. It's built from the ground up and just got released to Early Access on steam. The community is building. It's a whimsical and charming design. Kind of reminds me of Breath of the Wild. Very good to spend some time in.

I'm really hoping that Fallout and Skyrim make it to the Rift in an official capacity.

VR gaming has matured this last year, with a lot of great releases. Devs are constantly trying new ideas, some work, some don't but now is a good time to get in with much more selection to play.

Yeah, I've tried PSVR on a friend's PS4.

I thought Farpoint was a bit disappointing as it all seems to occur in underground caverns and not on some space station as well (lack of environmental variety).

Rigs is not a bad mech shooter. It's fast-paced and difficult. Nausea was a bit of a problem (latency possibly).

I ended up getting the HTC Vive, and Fruit Ninja VR and Dead Effect 2 VR. People that tried it out really liked Fruit Ninja VR but I have to rearrange furniture 'cause people kept knocking stuff off my desk.

I got a little queasy playing Elite, and the system map and galaxy map with my HOTAS seems harder than mouse/keyboard. Combat is a lot easier but plotting routes and selecting things in the system map is sort of tricky.
