[What I think about] landing on planets

It's not difficult at all - you are right. I'm just bad at landing and I will continue to practice and improve my piloting skills.

Sorry for criticizing a perfect game mechanic.

Easy, pilot, I’m just havin’ a bit of fun with ya.

It does take a bit of practice, but you’ll get use to it soon enough. Just remember: don’t approach anything any faster than you’re willing to hit it.

I think that's kinda the point tho ... on rough(ish) terrain no amount of practice will help you find that elusive landing spot as you slide backards, forwards, left and the right waiting for the brief flicker of "safe to land" (which vanishes again as soon as you get lower) ... and yet, if you recall the ship the AI can find it from considerable altitude and then fly straight down to it. If the game has software which can find a landing spot, why can't we have access to it?

I have a process.. I pick a pot and go for a landing. If I can't find a landing spot within 50 or so meters of that spot, I'll hop 100 or so meters away and try again, rarely need to do more than 1 hop and about 5 minutes on a landing.

I kind of expect the ship will land better than I do on a planet, it's way better at docking in stations than I am.

Yep, flying an Exploration Anaconda right now, it can easily get very tedious finding a landing spot.
(and once you found & nailed one down, it's quite typical that it's tiny - and that the Ship won't even properly settle down onto the Ground in FA OFF)

Heck, I'd probably kit an Advanced Docking Computer into that Exploration build - provided it could put the Ship down on the nearest indicated (blue areas on Surface Scanner Map?) place on the ground ;)

There's not less landing spots on a planet with a large ship. It's just that it may take a bit of configuring to land on some spots. I've landed at almost a 45 degree angle a couple of times rather than have to drive 3 or 4 k's to get to where I wanted to be. I have yet not been able to land my Conda any where I've had to. Ok, sometime it isn't as close to where some small ships can land. But rarely ever more than a half kilo away.

We do - it causes the entire ship to turn yellow (on my modified HUD) - though you have to have your gear down and be within a certain range of the surface - but I get the point being made - the Return from Raxxla landing system is a bit more adept - sort of.

I have had times where a suitable landing site was not within 2km and the recall did not succeed. I've also seen instances where recall has been impossible, despite there being plenty of landing areas (Guardian Sites and Ruins will force you 7.5 km outside the site to recall though you can manually land right in the middle of the site), and of course, my favorite of all - mid-air(less) landing, where a recalled ship will simply hover a few (to a few hundred) meters above the surface, though it can be dismissed again.

Dismiss and Recall are just game mechanics though - they're not really "systems". Given the nature of Elite: Networking, I suspect the 2k auto-dismiss range was selected as a means of keeping data transfers low and not bogging down the system potentially tracking the locations of hundreds or thousands of ships scattered across a planet's surface. I'll gladly trade some gamy mechanics for playability any time.

Why am I not allowed to land in the exact same spot the A.I. is allowed to land? Why do I have to fulfill different criteria for landing on surfaces?

Because they made the autolander always land close by to avoid the tedium of driving a long way to grab your pickup. If you want they could make it land 20+ km away if there isn't a closer spot. That would be okay with me.
