What if. .. elite was set in ww2 instead?

true, every nation had their skeletons during WWII, Germans were the only ones that gassed and baked people in ovens based on religion.
Other games pull off WWII, but an open, immersive sandbox type game where you play a racist SS guard... meh. I don't see the attraction. but to each their own.

I think we put a pin in this

ED griefers -> ?
Maybe some (this word is prohibited :rolleyes:) murderers? SS?

SCB -> (this word is prohibited :rolleyes:) superweapon

yeah, well, it's one thing to play a idealized/romanticized version of a pirate. playing for an army that actually condoned genocide... and you know, that entire holocaust thing.
Hits too close to home for most people. I'm not jewish, but even in a game I wouldn't want to role play a german soilder during WWII. Even if I got to fly an Me.262.
I'm not sure many of the low ranking grunts knew what was going on and condoned it, but I take your point. I would probably find it interesting to roleplay as a German, but you're right it would be pretty hard for a lot of people to play as them.

Stalin killed more people than Hitler. But everyone loves to play as the Russians. In the version I had planned out you just never here about the holocaust or mass murder. The allies didn't truly know until the war was almost over I also had the time set in 1942 . If you wanted to you could just say Germany was the general bad guy. Or you can even make up an alternate time where that doesn't happen. The empire has slaves Germany has forced labor camps.

The closest, that I can think of, is a Heroes and Generals. It's a great game, developed by a Danish studio. Available via Steam. It doesn't feature piracy and trading, but it is set on a huge map in Europe. You engage in war, and fight in battles - each battle taking place in a huge map featuring buildings, bridges, towns, farms etc. You can play as a German, American or Russian soldier in a variety of roles: infantry, tanker, armored troop carrier driver, pilot etc. Tons of vehicles such as bicycles, motorcycles, tanks, planes etc. all of which are unlocked as you rank up and earn cash. Eventually you might make it to a General, at which point you plan battles and make vehicles etc available for other players. Of course, it's nothing like the WW2 Elite game you describe, but it's the closest that comes to mind. Best thing about this is that it's not Call of Duty paced - it feels slower and requires more thought/planning/team work to do well in battle.

Much prefer ED though!

Sounds like a old game called R.U.S.E . It's a very good statagy game. I loved it to the point I was 394 online battles undefeated (each battle lasting an hour with a grand total 782 battle played with 759 wins.I currently have 900+ hours in elite dangerous ) I really like the freedom of elite dangerous but the setting of ww2. I also have a very deep hatred of space that's why I never go exporing.

I am still not sure if this thread was created as a joke.

No joke just weekly what if. A dream that will never be realised because I am alone in my interest. A dream that no matter what I do it will always stay a dream. A dream and nothing more........wow that's deep.

yeah, again, playing a russian or a german as a tank driver in a combat sim, or flying a bf109 in a battle... thats all a little different than a game that's immersive and invites role playing... don't just see anyone wanting to rank up through the german army during WWII. Well, not anyone I'd want to know anyway. But again, like I said, that's just me.
.

While on the topic of ww2 vs elite dangerous. Ships in elite are huge. A US destoyer during ww2 was about 110m long the anaconda is about 140m long and almost 4 time as wide. A light cruiser is about the same length as the anaconda. When you put it in that perspective we really need crews because manning a ship as big as the anaconda by yourself is just stupid and probably not even close to possible.

Eh, WW2 has been done to death. But a steampunk ED with airships instead of spaceships and huge floating cities would probably be the shiznit. You can call it Elite: Dastardly.
