What is a Caustic Sink Launcher?

Here is the info I know so far...

Unlock at a rescue ship
15 Chemical Storage Units
10 Galvanising Alloys
20 Caustic Shard
10 Corrosive Mechanisms (in the Malestrom)
5 Caustic Tissue Sample (in the Malestrom)

Engineered ammo capacity Grade 1 at Meene - Phoenix Base total 7 plus 1
1 Mechanical Scrap
1 Vanadium
1 Nobium

Synthesis Caustic Sinks
1 Chemical Storage Units
1 Galvanising Alloys
4 Caustic Shard
2 Corrosive Mechanisms

What does it do? Per the game play it's a modified heat sink.

Once installed in a Utilities slot it is automatically operational. When the ship encounters a caustic cloud it absorbs the substance into it's sink. A yellow bar shows the rate of absorption. With a flashing yellow bar the sink is full then ready to be manually ejected. Then another sink comes online. As long as the sinks are operational the hull receives no damage. Note that I couldn't find a binding in the controls so it is used with a fire group for now to eject them.

I haven't timed it yet and someone else can do the testing. First impressions with light caustic damage it absorbs longer say 3-4 min. With heavy caustic damage it may not last more than a minute. Used wisely it will significantly add more playing time before returning to previous means of removing caustic damage.

Is it a one time unlock then purchase as many as desired? I don't know yet until many more players obtain them. Like a heat sink it is also an ammo reload item suggesting reloads in a xeno CZ base will work if the Devs didn't nerf it. So much for Decontamination limpets. Also can be restored landing in a

Feel free to add or update this info If I missed anything.

UPDATE: Players responding to this thread say it is a one time unlock then purchase as many as desired. Landing at an Ax planetary base under attack they like weapons can be restored.

Regards

in terms of lore, they are semi-liquid anodes for ejection according to galnet.
you might know the concept of anodes from ships in our time against corrosion, or from your heating boiler, if it is an older model.
those anodes are used up over time and need replenishing - which is exactly how the caustic sink launcher works. it "stores" caustic damage, until it is used up, at which point you eject its ammunition for a fresh one.

all the other info you can get from this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...ids-maelstrom-exploration-02-mar-3309.614746/,

i had a very nice gaming session yesterday to get the materials from the maelstrom - actually the first time i visited one. great experience, dealing with orientation, watching the scanner for interceptors while collecting, masslock of a maelstrom etc.

Every thing that the Devs put into this game is actually real in our 21st Century world. Oh, we don't have faster than light drives but Trintium used in the fleet carriers is a viable fuel source. Every material that we gather for ships we know about in the real world. On foot materials I haven't checked that but Frontier obviously hired some scientists not only for accurate astronomy but for all the materials we play with. I assume many players miss the details that was put into this game hoping someday we will have faster than light drives. All the materials are here. :)

I use caustic sink launcher in ax combat, and it's good. One interesting thing - when caustic sink is partly used (not empty), then I can't restock modules at the port, I have to go to advanced maintenance - restock modules - to restock them one by one. When caustic sink is "empty" I can restock all at once from the main screen. So, I learned to eject caustic sink before landing.

Strange - this is nothing like the image that came into my mind when I first heard of a caustic sink launcher.
I thought it was more like a trebuchet adapted to dispose of ancient plumbing.

Something to grind out so you can last longer in maelstrom and similar phenomena
Actually it can also be useful for AX combat. A caustic missile hit only fills the bar up by 18%, so you can take 5 missile hits (and change) before you have to jettison a sink to reset the protection. Really nice for minimizing the effect of getting caustic applied by accidentally getting caught in the death clouds of scouts and interceptors.

It comes standard with 5 shots, and can be engineered (using the Heatsink Engineering blueprint) to hold 7. That's a lot of "no worries" protection for AX combat zones, where you can easily land and refill. Depending on your build, it might not be worth sacrificing something else for it on a medium ship due to only have four utility slots; on a bigger ship, you should easily be able to fit one or two and then be able to ignore most of the caustic junk.

I would pay 5000 quatloos for a caustic tissue sample. They are a PITA to get - by the time I'm in range the dang mines jet off covering me with goo, and you still have to target their subsystem to get the limpet to launch. I feel like a balloon chasing a porcupine with this mechanic.

This is driving me nuts

Oh, it's the broken record. Look at the unlock requirements. The new thingies needed are 5 Caustic Tissue Samples, 10︎ Corrosive Mechanisms and 20︎ Caustic Shards, for a one-time unlock. It's obvious where to find them. There is no way that's "grind". I picked up a few of the second and third items just poodling around the maelstrom on my first visit.

Anyone who things that's "grind" needs to give up gaming, completely, at once, because they'll never find a game they enjoy.

It is handy. However, I have found that it fills fast in the maelstrom. It isn't going to replace caustic resistance and I'm fairly certain it isn't taking that into account when absorbing. For rescues and fighting, it should last much longer.

Something another friend noticed. Once you install, rearm again and you get 1 more in reserve having the first one loaded in the chamber now.

I don't happen to have any free, but I'm sure there are others who have them on board a carrier for sale. My problem is I can't get the shards for my friends.

Caustic sink launcher is when you get to a Thargoid location and youve expended all you weapons and ammunition at them and as a final move go to throw the kitchen sink. Unfortunately in 330x the common or garden kitchen sink isnt that dangerous to Thargoids only the ancient enameled ones was a slight threat so weve developed the caustic sink, this can survive the cloud long enough to finally strike the maelstrom with its full force taps and all 😂

Yep. I plan to go back and gather more to store on my fleet carrier for my friends. After that, some more to sell to other players who don't want to deal with this. Regardless, they'll all still need to go to the maelstrom to gather the materials themselves. On the plus side, that isn't anywhere near as tricky as gathering the tissue samples.
