What is an Exploit? A general discussion

Did i just read this ? Seriously ? Equating paedophilia with earning a few extra credits in a computer game ? Perhaps not the best choice of analogy . People take this game and these forums far far too seriously.

see - thats your interpretation.
because "very young woman" =/= "child".

just because something isn't forbidden, it doesnt mean its right.

In b4 exploit: the cutter leaves the station and re-enters, dropping off 10T of cargo each time. Still going to be doing it a lot quicker than the small ship..... ;)

Double dang ! So the CGs will be full of Cutters and T9s wheeling and turning at the slot :D

This isn't true. Just because the developer didn't foresee it, doesn't mean it's cheating. Cheating is doing something that breaks the rules.

And it doesn't have to be a bug that is exploited. The definition says: "or". It can simply be a game system being used in a weird way. The engineer exploit was a clearly bug and a cheat. No one that used it thought he was making clever use of the system. They cheated. They knew they cheated. And it didn't suddenly turn into a cheat once the developers found out.

Refreshing the mission board by logging out and in again is an exploit, but it's not cheating. There's no rule that says when and why you're allowed to log in or out. Unlike the engineer exploit where you used G1 mats to get G5 results. That's a clear break of the rules.

Are you a lawyer in your spare time? :p You and Babelfisch identified I didn't follow through with the rest of the sentence in that Wiki definition.

There is also the added confusion, that FDev rarely come out and say Hey You! Stop It! It's not working as intended...

Even now, with the passenger missions, they've said, yep, the quadrilion paying missions are a bug. What about the 22m paying missions?

Right. What about the 10-15mil missions? FD I'm sure has an idea but doesn't want to say I guess. It will ruin the surprise.
We'll get a message from them that says
"Surprise!! Half your credits are gone! Btw have you seen the new items you can buy in the Frontier store?"

It should be simple, the Devs say it is, therefore it is.

However, sometimes, the devs have to figure things out and check stuff, are not aware, or aren't really very interested because they are interested in more exciting things.

For instance, the now infamous grade 5 mods, using grade 1 materials.

Clear cut, but, Frontier didn't explicitly state it was an exploit until a good while after it existed.

Less clear cut things are when frontier has it's own ideas of in game progession, and they don't realise there are methods to circumvent their design (unintended) to bypass the intented behaviour, however, no bugs are used.

Such as when players find a particularly lucrative method of gaining credits/rep/rank/BGS influence, which frontier were unaware was possible, AND which may take considerable development time to fully "solve"

Frontier might leave it around unless it's completely nuts (missions directly granting quadrillions in one go) but it's not the design they intended.
