Any books that talk about it? What is the culture like? Etc. Same for the fed and alliance?

There are several official novels to look at. For the Empire, I think the best in terms of background detail is Reclamation, by Drew Wagar.
This has some good info....But it is still a bit thin. All of the factions just seem very very flat. No depth in what they are really like.
