What is that blue orb...?

This is the problem with reading the forum. I had never noticed this and so it had never bugged me. Now, when I next get to fly, all I will be able to see is a large blue globe of some random planet.......

Forgive me, but I don't really understand the point of this. You're saying that you know it's a placeholder and yet you're moaning about what it's showing you?

If you know it's going to change for the release version then what is the problem? As it is a placeholder then by definition there would be no point in having different ones for different ships/locations.

Well, Ozric, the point of this thread has actually evolved since I started it.

When I started the thread, my point was to see if anyone knew what the planet in a hologram was, the one we all see constantly when nothing was targeted. I quickly realized, no one knew and was assuming things. For example, I was told that the planet holo actually wasn't the same always and changed depending on which planet you were close to (this is incorrect, btw. It does not change. It is a static holo image).

Then, my point became to find out if folks had even noticed this random static holo image of a planet that sat on their cockpits when nothing was targeted (and to continue to find out if anyone knew why). A couple of folks said they had or that they will when they play.

Lastly, I am now assuming that this static holo image of a planet is a placeholder. I am assuming this (I do not know for sure) because FD has pumped in such complexity and (attempted) realism into this game that it would be ludicrous to assume that every single ship in a galaxy (ships from different systems, factions, and manufacturers, mind you) would have the same static holo image of an unknown planet sitting on their target sensor when they weren't targeting anything.

So, here I stand with 2 hopes:
1) Either someone will eventually come along and give us a factual reason for this static image that will make sense (Beta 2.02 brought a ton of polish to the game, even a different sensor interface for supercruise; if this static holo image of an unknown planet in the targeting sensor window truly was a dev placeholder, I am assuming it would've been worked on by now).

2) Or, we would be able to make enough noise on the forums about this being kind of a silly thing and FD, who may not have been planning to do anything with the static holo image of the unknown planet, may actually end up doing something with it.

Nope, it does not change depending on which system you're in. That placeholder image of a planet (when you have nothing else targeted) is always the same regardless of which ship you're in or which system you're in. Go on and test it for yourself.

I just find it weird that with all the complex gameplay and realism being pumped into this game, the "placeholder image" for the target panel is the same of a random no-name planet for every single ship in the known galaxy.

Honestly, you leave a thread for five minutes  It does change, plz see the post above.

Actually... It is different...

Have a look at the screenshots in this thread:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=44711

They seem to look like the planet the person is flying over.

The first screenshot does make it look a little different. The others however are the same as my initial one. Here, have a look:

This is the one I showed in my first post:

These are from the thread you posted. Notice how the first is still the same one as mine but the second one is different!

This one is different because HE HAS THE PLANET TARGETED. If he had nothing targeted, it would be just like the screenshot above; a default static holo image of an unknown planet.

And these are from other screenshots of cockpits on the forums (might be from Beta 1.0x though):

lol, rolling eyes and all, man I'm just trying to figure something out here. I have honestly never seen it change. But I haven't played Beta 2.x for longer than an hour so maybe they have put in that change via the new "explorer" feature. I posted screenshots above to show you.

If you target a planet, you will see the image of the target planet, but if nothing is targeted, it still shows the default planet image.

:D

Ahhhh! So the issue-at-hand still stands! When nothing is targeted, there is always a default static holo image of an unknown planet.

You have me intrigued now too. :D Sadly I'm at work so can't test it just yet... assuming i can even get into the game when I get home.

If it is really a 'nothing-special-targeted' placeholder, why not display a rotating 'elite rank icon', visualizing your progress from harmless to elite?

I agree 100%. If it's going to be any static image, I would rather have one that is specific to you; as mentioned above, your rank!

Or even, at the minimum, the logo of your ship's manufacturer.

If you really want to get fancy, it could even show you a list of the 3-5 closest contacts/planets/stations to you as you fly around with nothing targeted (would be blank if nothing is around you). And it could show "Frameshift Drive Engaged" when in HC or SC.

I've been watching a lot of videos of people playing and I have come to the conclusion that it's not showing a planet, but the main star in the system you're in. Well, a stylised representation of it, so since stars are roiling plasma that changes all the time it shows a drawing of a generic star.
