Newcomer / Intro What IS that damned noise???

This has been bugging me for the best part of 2 years but I haven't bothered asking because I know it's going to be pretty hard to describe...

Sometimes my FSD starts making a weird noise, a bit like I'm carrying a cargo of frogs croaking or crickets chirping.

I'm almost certain the FSD is responsible for the noise. I can't hear it in normal flight, only in supercruise.
I do notice, however, that if I land my ship and board my SRV, I can hear the same noise when I'm close to my ship and it stops as I move away from it.

I think it starts after I've been fuel-scooping during longer journeys.

Is it supposed to be the noise of some kind of "contamination" to the FSD or something?
As far as I can tell, it doesn't change the performance of my ship in any way.
It's just damned annoying having to put up with the constant "Rrrrr-Rrrrr......Rrrrr-Rrrrr......Rrrrr-Rrrrr......Rrrrr-Rrrrr......" as I'm flying.

I'd try replacing my FSD but I'm currently stuck in the back of beyond where there aren't any suitable replacements available.

Is there any way you can post a recording, or to try to describe it more closely?
And what ship are you in?

A bit confused because you say can't hear in normal flight (only SC) yet you can hear it when you're in SRV?

I'd ask if it's the same for all ships .. except, what do you mean by back of beyond exactly?
This can be measured in the thousands of Ly's sometimes!

:D

Posting a recording would be a bit of a faff.
I'll see what I can do but I was hoping it might be something that everybody except me knows about.

I've had it happen in pretty-much every ship I've flown and it only appears occasionally.

You're absolutely right in that it's confusing that it only appears when the FDS is engaged but I can also hear it when I'm driving my SRV.
I've even tested this out by driving around my ship in the SRV and the noise is only apparent when I'm close to the rear of the ship, suggesting it's coming from the engines.
In the cockpit, my 7.1 speakers suggest, again, that it's coming from behind me and when I use mouse-look to move around the sound moves around my speakers, consistent with creating the impression that it's coming from somewhere at the back of the ship.

By way of another attempt at describing the noise, it's a bit like somebody running their fingernail along the teeth of a comb, constantly repeating.
It's not super-loud but it is very obvious.

I was wondering if, perhaps, it's the result of fuel-scooping in the "wrong" type of star, causing the FSD to become contaminated or something.
FDev seem to have done a superb job with the sound in ED so it seems likely this noise IS intended to signify something and I'm just not smart enough to realise what.

it's a known bug/ audio-artefact.

if it is like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvZfha_mAw0

cmdrs regularly freak out if they get it the first time at a special location ... beagle point, barnards loop ... do a youtube search for "elite dangerous strange noise"

i have that sound"effect" myself quite often. logging out to desktop, and restarting the game from the launcher helps.

Ah, that's it!

Disappointing to find that it's just an audio bug.

I did try googling "Elite dangerous strange sound" but the results were so varied that I gave up looking through them.

It is a bug! An audio-loop
I get it mostly after doing surface missions where you need to find the coordinates. You approach and the target moves so you do and during this, the noise appears. Sometimes this noise get cought in a loop and plays then everytime you are in supercruise.
I know 2 ways to fix it.

Without quitting game:
Doing a similar mission again and hope that the loop breaks.

Quitting the game and making a restart

You can fix all the other audio bugs (including the OP's) but leave my blackbird alone. It has chirruped quite merrily in my instrument panel during supercruise for two years so far and I need it to warn me of Thargoids!

;)

At the risk of labouring the point, have FDev actually confirmed this is an audio bug?

Last night I left the game while roaming around in my SRV.
Just started the game up and I'm back in my SRV, head back to my ship and I can hear the "chirping" noise immediately.

My next task was a delivery mission which resulted in me getting shot at.
Afterwards, I'm heading for another destination which was something like 230,000Ls from the jump-in point.
So, I'm trundling along in SC with absolutely nothing on my sensors at all, with the chirping noise in the background.
After about 10 minutes of me doing absolutely nothing except adjusting my heading slightly, there's a "bleep" (similar noise to when you target another ship) and the chirping stops.

There was no new message on my info HUD. No new contacts, no new messages. Nothing.
No idea what the "bleep" signified or why the chirping stopped right after the bleep.

If it's a bug then I guess the bleep might've ended whatever issue was causing the chirp but, then again, if that's the case you've got to wonder what actually caused the bleep.

It was almost as if the chirping was indicative of something amiss on my ship and then, after 10 minutes, the bleep signaled the ship recovering from the problem (whatever it was).

...........head back to my ship and I can hear the "chirping" noise immediately.

Are you sure you are not just being "over-sensitized" to the blackbird chirruping that exists on the sound-track when in supercruise? It is obviously an artefact recorded (presumably by accident) when the supercruise background was being laid-down in the studio. I wondered what was going on when I first noticed it, then I recognised it as a blackbird (lots of birds in the woods around me). I thought it had been removed at one point but it is definitely in there still.

[where is it]

I'm talking about the sound in the video Goemon posted.

It always seems to start after I've been fuel-scooping and it does seem to end with a distinct "bleep" after I spend a while in supercruise.

It really seems like there's something intentional causing it and there's a pre-defined reason why it ends.
Neither of which I can figure out.

If it is just a big then fair enough, but it really seems like it's intended to signify something.

strange I can hear the comb flick chirping in the video but I don't get this noise when I sc myself.....................
so by someone trying the following may help me zero in on its cause...........
has any one tried changing the numworker threads value 0 through to 6 or windows sample rate to see if it gets rid of it?
(AppConfig.xml ) it is engine related sound effect anomaly as determined by the lawful deductive post below (post 14)
so it seems soundcard process related to me atm (more process of elimination infomation required to diagnose)
also if using any sound suite mode from your soundcard control softwere for eg game\theater\ movies mode try disabling it from the boot up
and just using windows to control sound to eliminate that from possible causes (latest soundcard driver is a no brainer)
also run the game without any recording software to rule that out too, I run voice attack so its not that I can tell you also...........
I have in game voice chat off too as I just use steam to talk to friends
"take the straight and narrow path and if you start to slide give a little whistle!":D

I had the noise in question yesterday for IIRC the first time and it drove me nearly mad after some hours. I doubt it's meaningful in any way, as it seemed to be related to the "ship" somehow (IIRC it's silenced when you enter the option screen, and setting the effects volume silences it too). First I thought it was caused by one of the engineered modules in my Vette, but once it had appeared it was there whichever ship I chose from my entire fleet (in-station at Jameson, SD), so finally I bought a clean Sidewinder and turned off all modules I could, but still it didn't go away. Only exiting the game to desktop and relogging as Goemon suggested helped, and alas!, it was permanently remedied (up to now).

FWIW,
