what is the best squadron to join?

Check out this subforum for squads and stuff. One of the top forums on it looks very promising for what you're looking for:

With that said, I'd still be interested in seeing some anecdotal responses from folks who play in open a lot about what they've seen. I really think joining squads should be more encouraged than it currently is. I feel like Ive played this game for years without ever really being confronted by anything saying "hey! You should join a squad! I bet that would be fun"

Part of the problem is the lack of natural meeting points for players to hang out. For example, in WoW, you could hang around the capitals, just chatting to people and see their avatars jump around. It felt alive. You could also not go longer than 10 minutes without a guild tag before some random noob would ask you to sign their guild charter ... which was reason enough for a not super social bloke like myself to actually join a guild for them to stop bothering me. I hung around in that social guild for years but put my raiding toons in a different raiding guild.

Edit: I guess Borann system chat is as close as you get to that now ... :p

It's important that you find a group that has most of its members in the same or very close time zone.

I've been with one squadron for quite a while but the majority of its members are European where I'm in eastern US. Their prime playing hours are evening times which equate to afternoons for me. So there's a disconnect. The squadron must be active to be worthwhile. There is member turnover plus the fact that after some time, players aren't as active as when the game was new to them (that's my current condition). Features you want which come from Discord, chat and comms, are great for play and fellowship. I regularly talk to an Australian wing-mate about all sorts of stuff.

Good luck with you quest!

True. For instance, EVE has Jita due to it being the central market. For us, I guess besides Borann chat we have Jameson or Deciat... about the closest we get.

It would probably be nice if one particular system had something new and fancy the others didn't to get folks to show up there.

Edit: though at the same time it also is a good thing that folks in ED are spread out actually playing the game, as opposed to hanging around bored in Capitals like WoW. lol

Well you could go to Shinrarta in open, usually lot's of people there. Usually a diverse group of people, and if you don't mind a rebuy or 10 I think you could find a squadron which fit's your playstyle or at least get a pointer to where to go next.

Borann seems to work too, at least until the update is live.
