What is the Duradrive?

This thread is to speculate about what is the Duradrive. GalNet has a vague description. It says:

  • The Duradrive functioned perfectly
  • Zachary Rackham tested a Duradrive by jumping on it
  • Rackham used it to contact his chief accountant and authorise preliminary funding for the device.
  • It is a superior product (compared to the Torc)
  • We can expect to see it on the market soon (likely Q4 update)

How can players use it if we can't walk or jump yet?

Is it a hover board? I thought it would be a HUD customization device.

Update:

- The Duradrive entered mass production on 12 October 3304.
- It is a personal computer.
- A reliable tool tough enough to handle anything

Same as all the other fancy stuff hinted at in previous Galnet articles that never materialised/vanished.

100LY+ Diamondback, anyone?

Z...

My guess is this device gives us the Codex in Chapter 4.
Yeah, if I had to take a stab I'd say it'll eventually become the ED version of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide. A rugged device with both local and remote database access, that's always with the pilot.

The Torc sounds more like it was a stepping stone to an EVA HUD. And given that we're getting the Codex soon but no space legs in the foreseeable future, the whole back story about the Duradrive being an early success but the Torc having problems would seem to loosely fit with what we know of the development plan.

All speculation, but that's often all we have.

It's a piece of technology within the game lore, talked about in Galnet.

Not sure why people think this particular galnet story has to be something we as characters interact with.

I do like the idea of the codex being some kind of hitchhicker's guide. I'm not sure what sort of form it would take, particularly if it does end up being the basis for an EliteFeet HUD (although the notion that you could 'jump on it' does sound intriguing), but I do like the idea of it maybe being an extension of the ship AI.

The Codex will be an app on our phone called Duradrive?

It's going to eventually replace the turboencabulator.
Some side-fumbling may occur.

Hmm, if only there was some clue about us getting a new panel in q4 in our ships, that could maybe have been a hint... ;)

If it is in game technology:

Do you remember when FDEV presented the new Mining concept and they said that there will be a new HUD interface to interact with asteroids?
Then do you remember the new Exploration display to scan the planets?

That is Duradrive!

Isn’t this just Galnet fluff - it will generate a CG but nothing else???

We're getting two new panels in 3.3 (explo mechanics and codex). Generally when new stuff is introduced FD adds it to the lore via galnet as a way to appease people concerned about immersion ("why does my ship suddenly have a new panel?!").

Somebody has to clean all that Thargoid goo.

I don't want to know how he used those for contact with his chief
