What is the Duradrive?

If it is in game technology:

Do you remember when FDEV presented the new Mining concept and they said that there will be a new HUD interface to interact with asteroids?
Then do you remember the new Exploration display to scan the planets?

That is Duradrive!

Those are activities which are fairly inextricably linked to being in your ship. Why would they need a portable device?

Makes more sense for it to be for general comms and info.

We're getting two new panels in 3.3 (explo mechanics and codex). Generally when new stuff is introduced FD adds it to the lore via galnet as a way to appease people concerned about immersion ("why does my ship suddenly have a new panel?!").
Yep. Plus I’d imagine that squadrons will need a new interface too.

I hope that it’s also a pointer to some things being made accessible outside of the main game client too (mobile app, etc.) as there’s likely to be various things which it’d be good to be able to do without the restrictions put in place by having to use the main game client. Might just be wishful thinking on my part though!

It's what happens when Guardian tech is used to create new hybrid smart phones. It has a tiny shield booster for better screen protection.

It is a tablet like person computer

The jumping on bit was the "look how tough our product is" marketing stunt.

Sadly they had to be recalled, because people kept poking out their eyes when bringing them up to their face. Thanks to 34th century medicine this was just a minor inconvenience, but it became a constant source of bad memes on galnet.

I read them as two personal computers, one being a ruggedised tablet and the other being some wearable guff like the iwatch.

There was a galnet news report about the iwatch one being cancelled, presumably because someone noticed that it would have been too similar to a star citizen MobiGlas:

If it follows on from current smartphones, then you'll need an iCutter to even carry it.

Cumulo-Granite is *very dense*. :)

It's usually collected by a mining procedure called Continuing VFR Into IFR Conditions.

Easily recognized by the sound of an explosion, followed by raining aerospace parts.

An analog is using your cell phone on an Interstate, mining for spare parts... :)

This thread is to speculate about what is the Duradrive. GalNet has a vague description. It says:

  • The Duradrive functioned perfectly
  • Zachary Rackham tested a Duradrive by jumping on it
  • Rackham used it to contact his chief accountant and authorise preliminary funding for the device.
  • It is a superior product (compared to the Torc)
  • We can expect to see it on the market soon (likely Q4 update)

How can players use it if we can't walk or jump yet?

Is it a hover board? I thought it would be a HUD customization device.
Hmm. My guess it that it will be our first personal weapon.

"DIE THARGOID SCUM!!!" *hits it with the Duradrive*

Nah, given the state of technology (esp computers) in the elite universe, less a pip-boy and more a PDP-11/750 with optional 1kilobyte washing-machine drive pack.

Have you seen the PDP-1 in action? They have one at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View and I was in town the weekend that Peter Samson booted it up. Weew boi it was a lot cooler than I expected! The luminous quality of the CRT was like nothing else I've experienced, and I'm 3-0 in Spacewar!
