Newcomer / Intro What is the etiquette for playing in Open mode?

Hi commanders. So far I have been playing ED in Solo mode, developing my skills and building up a bank balance which is now at 4 million credits. I had one sortie in Open play last night, someone interdicted me and I eventually blew his ship up. Usually when I play games in multiplayer mode it is destroy everyone in sight or everyone who is not on your team - there is no great subtly. However from reading posts on the forum I suspect this is not the accepted method of play in ED. So how does one play in Open mode? I am not a member of a wing, just a lone ship in space. I have no hesitation in engaging with wanted pilots if the conditions are in my favour, but otherwise is it considered bad form to attack human players who are clean? I am trying to establish what is the advantage in Open mode play. Yes I will encounter other human players as open squares or triangles but what can I do that I currently cannot do in Solo without causing offence to other players and breaching the etiquette that the majority of players follow?

If it is a trading ship you can interdict them and ask for a portion of their loots and kill em if they don't comply, an explorer is pointless to attack, and anyone who steps into a RES or Combat zone should be fair game. But, killing for the sake of it is frowned upon.

In general, anything goes, excepting combat logging.

Killing clean players is generally frowned upon, especially "for no reason" - e.g. No comms etc.

Likewise rookie sideys.

Some people are more attached than others to their ships, but my opinion is that if you fly in Open then you must be prepared for anything.

Most human players will be around the core words CGs and sol.

Good hunting cmdr!

Have my Rep to ask about the correct behaviour before starting to offend anyone. That's great.
As you convinced me that your have enough of a good imagination whats wrong and whats right, please continue.

Basically everything is allowed by the game's mechanic but you need to stay to your role you want to play here.
If you are a phychotic murderer, kill anything passing your way. If you are a honest combatier, go to combat and war zones
to find plenty of fight possibilities. If you are a pirate, try to press the cargo out of the traders ships but don't destroy them
because destroyed ships will give less cargo.

Attacking clean ships and destroy them will make you a criminal and you will be treated as one.
If you kill only wanted ships you are a bounty hunter and will be treated that way.

Its an fully open game and the players holographs on the radar if filled or not shouldn't decide what you gonna do.
The game is about you and your ship and the space ahead. Make the best out of it and fly safe.

Regards,
Miklos

I'd go with what's been said already regarding combat.

If you find a base station that you call home: get to know the other players that hang there and just say hi to them.

Additional: when docking and there are other players about stick to the green lane. Try to give way to big cargo ships - they don't manoeuvre too well.

Maybe ask yourself how you would feel if someone did to you what you are considering doing. If you don't like it, then probably others won't either.

I'm pretty sure that this is not what those of the pirate profession go by, but what do I know... I hunt the pirates...

However to the OP, play how you want. You want to kill everything you see, go for it. Doesn't really matter how anyone feels about it, or what courtesy the carebears expect. But remember there is always a better pilot out there with a bigger ship. And when you don't play nice he will know from your bounty. The way you play will dictate how others react to you. And whether or not you are hunted.

Finally, at the risk of sending this into a complete Open/Solo spiral I would say that you would have much more respect (from me at least) if you had earned all your credits in open.

That's not to say that you are playing it wrong - you can play as you like of course - but again IMHO if you hunt players in Open, then you should have earned your chops in open.

Peace, fly safe and Good Hunting Cmdr.

[Definitely Don'ts]
These things are not allowed:
1) Cheats/exploits (for obvious reasons)
2) Abusive communications (unless you are Lil' Wayne in space you shouldn't really need to)
3) 'Griefing', or the continuous harrassment of specific cmdrs for no reason other than to be a nuisance
Do note that many consider randomly killing people also 'griefing', but that kind of gameplay is really allowed.

[Probably don'ts]
These things are allowed, but often frowned upon:
1) Kill beginners in starting ships while you sport a fancy death machine
2) Being inconsiderate of other players' safety. Eg. boosting through the slot in a massive T9 when smaller ships are in front of you.
3) RP'ing a 'crazy psychopath' without any communication with your victim. In contrast, allying with some theocracy and become some kind of deranged crusader with appropriate interactions, for example, is ok.
4) Kill-stealing: waiting in CZs and RES/NAVs until someone else's target is almost death, then swoop in and kill it off.

[Do's]
Be respectfull and kind towards others. If someone has to be a victim for your RP, atleast make them part of an interesting and unique story that goes beyond staring at an insurance screen. Also understand that the demographics are a bit different here than in the typical FPS game: we have a lot of older folks, some even 70+, and plenty of folks here let their (young) children play. So if, for example, someone is ignoring your comms, maybe it is because you're talking a Romanian six year old boy who doesn't speak English, or a 78 year old woman who doesn't type that fast.

And last but not least: always assume everyone is insane and out to get you!. I don't know what you're flying, but make sure it is outfitted not for max profit, but max safety. If you're a trader, for example, put a shield, some shield cell boosters and PTD against hatch limpets on there. Make sure you know what to do when a strongr opponent interdicts you. Have an emergency jump location ready, and plot your journey carefully. The vast majority of players are pretty cool, but you'll eventually run into some weird folks. Having prepared yourself is what will have you survive an exciting event, rather than complain online how it was so unfair you got killed. :p

Be nice & fly safe, commander!

Fortunately for me then that your respect or affirmation is of absolutely no consequence or value to me. The game designers allowed Solo/Open to be intermixed and my credits didn't disappear when I ventured into Open and I certainly didn't feel the need to donate them to the local charity for ship-less pilots.

Exactly.

This.

It happens all the time in RESes. I rolled a new account, and find the behaviour of the other CMDRs to be pretty shocking. Funnily enough, they give you a very wide berth when you're in a Fer de Lance and they wouldn't think twice about shooting at your target. In a Sidey though...

I've fitted A2 shields plus an A0 shield booster on the utility mount. If you steal my kills, I'm going to ram you.

There's a bunch of good posts. I just wanted to add that if someone interdicts you, you are totally allowed to kill them. They pulled you out of supercruise for potentially criminal reasons.
There are in game rules about not shooting clean ships, so you may want to scan a ship first. You may also get pulled out by a NPC Navy ship from either Feds or Empire and sometimes they just want to scan you, so wait for a bit to see if that's the case.

Out of game, the only big rules I have seen are
no cheats
no killing people simply for the sport of killing them especially newbies, especially in newbie start areas (LHS 3447, Eravate). Asking for cargo and threatening if you don't get it. is fine (but will get you a bounty in game)

Chrisfs, you're funny - you're totally allowed to kill anyone but there are consequences. If a clean pilot interdicts you and you kill them, you'll get an assault bounty for attacking them and a murder bounty if you kill them. Of course, this may change with the next release but until then, it still holds true.

That may have something to do with the possibility of them being a bounty hunter and wanting to scan you, if you're clean, you are free to go. If you're not, they are going to try and deal with you.
.
Either way, there are ways of dealing with interdictions no matter the intent - and to my mind [as a clean trader/explorer] any interdiction is not indicative of friendly intent and if you forcefully disrupt a ship in supercruise, possibly causing damage in the process, then you ought to be prepared for them to either run or fight. I know I'm not going to stop peacefully and wait for my ship to be destroyed.
.
Mind you, I now make sure I don't wander into systems engaged in civil war, as the risk to my ship and cargo is just too much for me to be comfortable with. Once I have maxed my exploration/trading, that may well be a different matter but for now I am content to be a NCP out in the black away from all the trouble and strife. An excellent way to relax and unwind after a day at work - get thousands of lightyears away from the nearest grade 4 ignorant.

Rofl, I meant no offence. Do you see the irony in asking about the etiquette of Open then when I give you an example of etiquette you disregard it?

Fly safe CMDR.

That's really something of personal opinion. You don't harm anyone by playing in solo/group AND open and nobody really knows until you're friends with them in-game (so they see you playing solo/group) or you tell them. The game is desinged for this to work.

So in terms of 'etiquette' I'd say is completely legit or if you're honest has nothing to do with etiquette at all.

I think there is some etiquette to it, but it is not as black/white as ethelred makes it look. Generally speaking people do frown upon those who use Solo to tradegrind money, and Open to 'roflstomp' people in beginner-ships. But that doesnt seem to be what the OP is about, it seems he just used Solo to learn the basic mechanisms and now feels ready to go to Open. He says he has a mere 4 million credits, he's not going to grief around in a Viper, after asking for social mores, now is he? :p And btw, I recently took a Sidey and 500cr to a different part of populated space to start a fresh pirate career, and the systems I am in have seen zero cmdr traffic other than myself. I am playing open, but for all intends and purposes it is Solo. Anyone who wants to can earn 4 million in Open while never seeing anyone else, so dont make it out to be more then it is.

There is none.

Gank squads of mindless morons await you and your hard-earned ship.

At least that has been my experience, and that of many others.
