What is your favorite ship, or favorite ships, for exobiology?

I started exobiology only recently, but I am enjoying it and I started out in my DBX but hate the slow fuel scooping, but I will always have a DBX and use it here and there. So I switched to the AspX for the larger fuel scoop, and it is nice, but it has a larger footprint and takes a little more work to land on some planets near the specimens you want to scan, and the rate of yaw is horrible, I usually have to yank and bank it.

I realize I can take an SRV or the new one (Scorpion?) but as for now I only want to fly, soon I will try the SRV for exobiology. I have a lot of miles in the SRV from back before we had material traders, I have scooped up many materials on planets over many hours lol.

Then I read that someone loved the Dolphin for its small size for exploration and I looked back in the filing cabinets in my mind (it is not yet computerized, but everything is done manually still) and I remembered that the Dolphin had excellent yaw in my early passenger runs so I built one for exobiology and love it.

That lead me to think that with the peppy performance and smaller footprint being so nice I may as well try my Imperial Eagle, and what a pure joy it is swooping down from orbit, spotting some specimens and landing in very tight places, and boosting back into space so quickly... But then again there is the small fuel scoop and slower scooping.

I have a Cobra MKIII that is set up perfectly for this also and want to try it, it might be the perfect middle ground being fast, nimble, and having a small footprint. I will try it a bit tonight perhaps.

But, of course, I also saw that some folks love the Phantom for general exploration, so I bought and built one specifically for exobiology and I love it, I removed all of the engineered parts out of my Python and put them in the Phantom and it is quite a ship. But it has a pretty big footprint on some planets with very rocky terrain.

I think the perfect thing would be if we could hover above the surface and hop in our snub and go land by a specimen anywhere and scan it. Those specimens on the mountains that I do not have the patience to take an SRV to would be no issue lol.

But I must relax and slow down and enjoy the process of getting to the specimens by ship, SRV, or on foot, as much as I enjoy selling it to Vista Genomics lol.

How far/long can you go on foot safely?

So I guess my favorite ship is the Phantom even though it is not perfect as it sometimes has to land a little farther away from a specimen than I'd like, but they are all ships that I love and will keep using here and there as they call out to me.

I need to try an Imperial Courier perhaps, depending on the biggest fuel scoop I can use in one, they are very fast and nimble.

Thank you.
Phantom. Why? Because of all the top Exploration/Exobiology capable ships, she is the only one that you can board from the FRONT. Might seem like nothing, but trust me, if you really do exobiology, this will soon trump all other considerations.

Not really, A lot of the time in my Asp I fly over and land so that Bio's like Bacterium and Tussock are at my feet when I dis-embark, don't even have to step to scan:)

Viper 4 disembarks from front as well, and lands in places a Phantom won’t, which is a big factor for exobiology for me. Phantom will have 1.5 X more jump range of course, but that matters little to me unless I’m trying to travel vast distances with a main goal of going from A to B.

T6, fly towards the bio at half throttle as you pass over the bio throttle off and you will step out of the ship on top of it! How can that be easier. The Phantom, while a good ship for exo-bio, I do agree there, struggles with rough terrain where the T6 will land just about anywhere, and that's fairly important, can't land, can't scan bio!

I have also learnt the art of walking backwards rather than having to turn around if only a short distance to get to Bio:)

I tried the Python MKII out and it is okay but hard to find a landing spot, so I finally took a Scorpion out to go scan the distant matter, and the fun wears out quickly lol.

I will try a Type 6 for sure, as well as my Cobra, and I even bought an Adder because I remember how fun that ship was back in the day.

I will then end up with a favorite 3 ships that I can switch out for variety and as needed. I love the SC FSD, it geta you there in a hurry when a long super cruise can be boring. But those long cruises can be nice when conversing with the spouse, eating a sandwich, or what have you.

It has been a long time since I have played until the last 2 weeks, and now I have been reminded that I detest many jumps right after another and a little longer scooping time is more desirable if need be. So, I am going to stick with the AspX, Dolphin, Phantom, and DBX as my exobiology ships. Plus out in the black being able to jump over 60 LYs is a great thing, and the ones that are a little under that will be handy also, but I don't like having less than a 50 LY jump range, anything less than that and I am going crazy from so many jumps.

Thank you all for your suggestion's commanders.

Using a Imp Courier for exo, but only because I'm hitching a ride on a friend's fleet carrier. It lands well and makes for good screenshots.

If not using a fleet carrier as a basing point for exploration, then the DBX. But truly I wish some of the other small ships could rival its jump range. So many of them look great and are underused at this point in the game's lifespan, people have moved on from those ships. Make them viable again with more jump range.

I am really enjoying readying everybody's preferences, and why each of us thinks our ship suits us best.

Very valid point raised about the position of the blue cricle, however I am pretty sure that once I know my ship, doesn't matter where the door is, I can always land so that I disembark on top (or very close) to the specimen to sample whether it's at the front, at the back or on one side (looking at you, Dolphin).

My first choice is DBX. I don't mind undersized fuel scoop. I do system scanning during scooping so no time wasted.
But if the trip is shorter, jump range is not crucial, and I need more fun: Side'y with engineered enhanced thrusters. You won't spot many organisms at 700 m/s but flying low in this ship is so much fun!

I am out testing my Cobra MKII now and loving it, it is engineered out the wazoo, lands in a tight area, and you exit right at the front, and I have a jump of 48 LYs.

Besides the small distrubutor, I think the AspX is about the best. I loaded a Scorpion in it and will use it for my next outing. It is almost time to return to the black for a week or two again.

I might just stay out for even longer.

Up till now I have used the DBX, AspX, and Phantom depending on what I felt like at the time. It appears I have a few more ships to check out the next time I go exploring with or without exbio. The Tharg war called to me, but it appears that is slowly winding down, so I expect I'll be out exploring again soon(tm) enough.
