Never pay to win. Just don't do it kids.
One thing that will drive people away from this game quicker than anything is making it a pay to win, and make no mistake, you allow credits to be bought with real money and it will be just that. And it most certainly will effect the way the game is played in Open game. It impacts games like EVE, and War Thunder. So no....Frontier can make lots of money offering us a myriad of other things to purchase - that don't have an impact on the game play.
As the majority of the people will argue that it doesn't matter what another person has in this game in respect to you, would it be fair to say that...

buying credits for real cash doesn't affect anyone at all?

There is no "win" in this game, hence it wouldn't be pay to win.
How, exactly?
. . . there are tons of ways for Frontier to monetize this game that do not come anywhere near pay to win . . .
I was thinking more about a weapon, defense, armour or tool of some sort that can only be purchased with real money but which provides that win advantage over others. Is it pay to win though ?
I buy credits to spend in the game to buy the same ships and equipment as you. Have I just done a pay to win there or just bought credits to be able to have fun in a game I enjoy ?
I would understand this statement if there were special items to buy on the store like better shields or ammo or stronger armour. Then it is pay to win, but to be able to buy regular items in a game then it is not pay to win. Yes I could fly around in a Anaconda but as it has been proven many times flying one of those is not a win all situation ship.
I think others buying credits has potential to diminish the sense of value of your own hard earned cash, ships and equipment.Read this people this explains it all.

<nods> Better that than subscriptions!Although it won't affect me, it's very likely (imho) that cash for credits WILL be coming...
