What kind of game IS powerplay? What kind of game COULD it be? Ruminations on game genres and limitations.

Just gonna throw my two cents in here. I don't "do" PP other than module shopping, nor do i give two bits about the BGS, so ignore my opinion if you wish. But speaking as a "normal" player, not a roleplayer or anything, the entire system needs simplification. It is absolutely incomprehensible to most people.

Indeed.
Mind you, it’s probably a tall order to make it simple and still have something that isn’t too ‘banal’ for want of a better word. I would be willing to invest time and effort in understanding something that is worth understanding …

Its why in this regard the BGS way of factions is the simplest, because its adding up one number (i.e. the amount of systems you run).

The problem for the BGS is that you get too little a reward for pushing, while PP is complex.

BGS is that you get too little a reward for pushing,
That's probably due to fdev's typical 'caution' regarding the BGS

I don't find the BGS very simple tbh, in fact the strategy around managing the BGS can get pretty intricated (way over my head).
Do you mean that because PP sits 'on top' of the BGS it will necessarily be 'complicated'??
I suppose complicated is ok if it gives people something engaging to get their teeth into, otherwise ..

The BGS suffers because it was never really meant to be gamed (hence the 'background' bit) but once the lid was popped open its been a game driver because the whole game (i.e. mining, exploration, combat, trade, smuggling, piracy etc) revolves around it. So its gone from a very simple state system to one that is the nexus of everything even if you are nto aware of it.

Maybe its because FD let slip various bits of the 'black box' (INF levels and such) things are easier to understand, and that Powerplay was largely left to the players to work out (which took years and even now parts like the Galactic Standing are still mysterious).

By simplicity I meant that unlike Powerplays control / exploited bubbles (which have a branch of maths all of its own) you have the BGS approach which is individual systems only (i.e. everything is a control system). If you had this it removes 5C at a stroke because no system has value, the value lies in occupying that place (and that you have one more system).

The BGS's problem is that its slow and largely hides whats going on, while Powerplay makes things quite obvious. One approach could / can be making Powerplay a quicker and more punchy 'BGS lite' perhaps. But either way I agree it has to be much simpler.

What powerplay could be: An exciting open-only war where PVP is relevant. Mechanics like combat expansions are balanced properly against hauling. Systems change hands often, and it takes more than a 25% minority vote on a bad week to expand to a really poor loss maker.

What powerplay is: A solo-mode sabotage simulator.

I would like more gameplay options around it as well: special missions issued by the power factions with special equipment, including ready built engineered ships for hire once you have enough merit. As far as on foot goes I have no idea, but I'm sure there is potential there too.
