What kind of support is there for a pvp flag which is raised automatically by certain activities?

Note, that this would not be my personal preference, I'm happy with teh modes we have now, just throwing it out there as a compromise I could live with, as a BGSer and semi serious pvper...

So, if your pvp flag is down, you cannot be interdicted by players, and your ship cannot be damaged by player weapons, munitions or rams from other player ships.

When your pvp flag is up, the game is exactly as it is today.

Your PvP flag is raised automatically when (this is just an initial list, we can expand on this and refine it :)):

Being in a hostile control system while pledged (we can expand this to include systems being expanded into, prep systems, whatever, I don't pp much you guys can discuss the specific circumstances)
Being wanted for player murder anywhere
Being in a populated Anarchy system
Entering a Combat Zone
Entering a Compromised Nav Beacon
Entering a HAZRES
Transporting anything from an approved list of 'piratable materials', which includes most of the high value stuff, OR transporting a total goods over a certain value.

That last one's contentious, but you can't kill pirating...maybe keep the list specific, anything of equal or higher value than platinum, for example. Like I say, this is rough, we can refine.

It needs to be fair to PvEers, but also to PvPers, compromises and all that.

Any support?

That functionality has been in the game for quite some time now.

I'm surprised you've never heard of open!

Not sure if I support or don't support this, but I'm wondering whether CGs should be on your list of places where the PvP flag is raised.
Following the logic of your suggestion, I'd think they should be.

I'm an open supporter, I don't think the game needs changing, but believe it or not, there are others who deserve to play their way and we can reach some sort of compromise. I'd like the game to grow from where it is today, not that I think it's dying, but I think it could grow more.

I'd be ok with a system like this for "noob-protection" for the first month of game-time maybe.

Else I don't really see the point. We have the three modes. It works for me and most people I know.

If there needs to be a change I'd rather have more options for the owners of private groups. It could be as easy as a checkbox for player to player damge on/off.

I would not like to see changes to open because I like how open plays right now. I would not like to have an artificial flag system in open. This would feel very gamey for me.

I thought about this, but given the fact that this would be a guaranteed place to find people who will have their pvp flags up, it would make them 100 times worse than they are today (in terms of griefers). The sharks would be fighting over who got the seals.

Or maybe people would see it as a challenge and anyone in open, wants to chance their luck? Cos there's always PG and solo if they don't. ;) Yeh I think I agree with you after all, sharks an' all. :)

There used to be a time when I would have cried sacrilege!

So many years later... more gray hairs than ever... the game has gone through a "rework", C&P redesign, RNGineers rebalance and it seems just as easy to go into "unintended mode" and just as likely to do so due to boredom...

But in any case, it should be connected to a player statistic showing how much time was spent with the flag either up or down. For bragging rights.

You'd need to increase the rewards for the players in Open, I think, the make the challenge worthwhile. Bragging rights alone probably aren't going to cut it.

I like it, the stand out issue is with being wanted. While it has many of the hallmarks of a PvP flag it does place a restriction that may be unwanted. I could live with it.

Here's a (now closed due to age) thread on a loosely similar concept from a while back, it may prompt some ideas or help establish legitimate objections.

Meaningful PvP Proposal

Negative.
The space is vast.

Btw, don't you have other business to attend to, like protecting fledgling explorers?

Me? No, we're mostly BGS mate and sanctioned pvp. We do a bit of anti griefing occasionally, but it's rather occasional. We haven't been to Eravate. You must be thinking of someone else.

Besides, maybe you misunderstand, I said the compromise would satisfy me. Personally, I don't think the game needs changing (in this way), but I recognise for its own good and for increased player population, this might be a worthwhile idea.

Make it a requirement for an Engineer unlock - 50 hours with an active PvP flag.

I think the notion is a workable one. But, it will depend on exactly what triggers this PvP flag. Simply entering a CZ or Nav. Beacon is not acceptable. i think this kind of flagging should be kept to actions that are illegal. Certainly attacking a clean player would qualify.

A PvP flag would be great. Honestly, I don't think Fdev will effectively address C&P issues unless pressured from the outside by the mass and social media. I find the overt advertising of DW2 by Frontier and yet the server breakdowns and sanctioned ganking of explorers in Pallaeni to be utterly mystifying.

I think FDev have, wisely, decided that players simply make for better villains than they could possibly program.

Richard Bartle would agree methinks.
