General / Off-Topic What movie remake would you like to see?

Avatar: the Last Windbender's a good example of that. 10 hours of the first season condensed down into 90 minutes.

Isn't comparing Avatar: the Last Windbender to the LotR book trilogy a little erm......off? The devil is in the detail and the LotR books are right up there with the likes of Dune and other sci-fi/fantasy works that are famous for their incredible 'near real life' realism and attention to detail.

The LotR films are BAD because they fail to fully realise the detail from the books (a typical issue for book to film conversions), even in the three epic helpings Peter Jackson made. However they are also GOOD films because they tried their best with an impossible job. You simply could not make a single 90min film and still call it LotR's (you might have been able to do the Hobbit that way, and perhaps Peter Jackson should have done that, but the execs wanted more profits so we got a rather stretched out trilogy for a much smaller book).

Avatar: the Last Windbender's a good example of that. 10 hours of the first season condensed down into 90 minutes, not really enough time to properly tell the tale. Forgetting all the other troubles it had, of course, like poor casting, directing, etc, etc, etc...

There's talk of a B5 movie. Loved B5, doubt it could easily make the transition to a movie given those very same issues.
B5 would suck as a movie. It's complex story needs the TV series format to shine.

Increasingly, the best stuff is on TV.

As production values of TV increase, the "USP" of movies, their big budget allowing for spectacular effects, has been eroded and their shortcoming of limited time to tell a story has become more obvious particularly when adapting novels and series of novels.

That sounds more like one of his many attempts to continue the franchise rather than a remake though.

Not sure how you arrive at that conclusion, since he flat out says he's aiming for a reboot... :)

I think the B5 movies were the product of a cancelled show and throwing stuff together into movies, similar to Farscape's final season.

B5 ran for a planned 5 years. The movies were sponsored by TNT because they wanted to milk the franchise a little more. At least, that's how I understand it.

The comment I was replying to was about condensing the LotR movies into one, so I think the comparison is fair. Added to that, ATLA did have several complex story arcs that would (and did) suffer when compressed to a 90 minute movie.

That was precisely my point. I consider B5 one of the best Sci Fi shows since the Original Trek. And, yea, some of those story lines would get lost when compressed into a smaller format. Londo & Adira, Leneer & Delenn, Marcus'a sacrifice, both of Garabaldi's betrayals, etc, etc, etc... all of those arcs I would expect to get lost, lose impact or just simply not resonate from a condensed story.

Couldn't agree with you more, but for me, movies began to suck shortly after Star Wars when everybody tried to do what they did and the focus on character was lost for special effects and pacing... for me, the fact that the only thing Hollywood seems to produce anymore are comic books and reboots, is indicative that Hollywood is dying.

Steven Spielberg is going to make a remake of "West Side Story" directed in 1961 by Robert Wise

"West Side Story" is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet", located in the Lincoln Square district of Manhattan, part of the Upper West Side, where are in confrontation two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets.

Well here is a remake on a very very great movie (ten Oscars)
