I mostly listen to Rock and Metal (this is also my most preferred music overall) while flying. :)

As genres, anything with Power Metal, Symphonic Metal, or classical Heavy Metal and Classic Rock would do best for me. Some more modern bands are in my faves too. :)

As bands, here are some examples:
"Classics": AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Queen...

Power and Symphonic Metal: Rhapsody of Fire (especially the old albums until 2011), Nightwish (anything goes, but I especially recommend the older albums with Tarja Turunen), Within Temptation, Delain, Helloween, Stratovarius, Silver Lake by Esa Holopainen,...

"Modern Rock": Volbeat, Lacuna Coil, Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, ...

And also, a bit of Alternative Rock might do well :)

With bands like: Muse, Polarkreis 18, Biffy Clyro, 30 Seconds to Mars,...

I either listen to LOTR on audio book found on YTube , or mostly put an 80's radio station on.

I tend to turn the music off in the game.
It's not, that I don't like the ingame music (in fact I listen to it on spotify when driving car) but I learned, that the ingame sound is very important and so far the best sound design I every listened to in a game.

But when I listen to music while playing, mostly movie scores around scifi and epic movies.
Tron OST for example or Interstellar OST.
The rest is mixed, mostly metal and electronical music and david bowie will do it in any situation ;)

honestly, lately ive been flying to the soma stations and third rock on the inara radios. used to vibe my spotify, but the ambient do nothing vibe of the inara radio just really nails it. really feel like a space putter drifting the stars with the radio on in my cockpit ^_^

I'm kind of curious what music do you explorers like to listen to, when sailing far aways among the distant stars.

I listen to a lot of stuff, but the top of the list for me is Oxygène by Jean Michel Jarre, which creates the perfect feeling of being alone in places where no one has ever been to. Another one is Stellaris soundtrack.
I don't have music playing as I have Elite Discovery with TTS telling me whether a system is worth my time. So I listen to that and the sounds of deep space in VR.
If I did listen to music though it would be symphonic metal and heavy metal from my Amazon playlist or Youtube playlist.
