What mustelids would you like to see at Planet Zoo?

Yellow-throated marten is absolutely top of my list, not only of mustelids but of any animal I want to come to the game. Everything about them is just perfect.

I honestly would like to see loads of different mustelids to suit all sorts of different regions and biomes. These are the ones that immediately spring to mind, ranked in order:
  1. Yellow-throated marten (as mentioned above)
  2. European mink (a Critically Endangered species endemic to Europe, probably my preferred option for a semiaquatic European mustelid)
  3. Honey badger (a well-known species found throughout Africa and large swathes of Asia)
  4. Tayra (while the marten is my top choice for an arboreal mustelid, I wouldn't mind seeing the Central and South American tayra as well)
  5. Eurasian otter (my favourite choice for a new otter - a medium-sized solitary species that can live in every single in-game biome)
  6. Greater grison (another South American option - like a miniature honey badger, which is present in a couple of European zoos)
  7. Siberian weasel (of the smaller terrestrial weasels, this is my favourite - a colourful creature that is also pretty big for a weasel)
  8. Javan ferret-badger (a strange-looking little mustelid from Indonesia, which does indeed look like a bizarre cross of ferret and badger)
  9. Wolverine (not massively appealing to me, but they are found in zoos so I would tolerate their arrival)
  10. Spotted-necked otter (this would add an African otter species to the game, which I think is still kept fairly regularly in the USA)
  11. Sea otter (the biggest of the mustelids and undoubtedly a pretty animal, but personally not one I find massively relevant)

I would love to see Honey Badger, Wolverine, Sea Otter and some kind of marten. The Yellow-throated Marten is really interesting coloured animal, I would be thrilled to get it. All of these are reasonably different from each other. We are probably not going to get all of them (I am only optimistic about Wolverine), but I would welcome all of them.

Are we talking mustelids only or the whole musteloid group?

For the former, I'm happy with the following:
  • North American river otter
  • Honey badger
  • Black-footed ferret
  • Fisher
  • Tayra
If talking about the whole group, then:
  • South American coati
  • North American ringtail
  • Eastern spotted skunk

My top picks are the common ones: wolverine, yellow throated marten, and honey badger. Also a weasel, such as the pretty siberian weasel or the short tailed weasel. Oddball picks? The striking marbled polecat, or the perfectly-named chinese ferret-badger.

The Wolverine is my #1 priority of any animal at this point, so obviously that. If that were the only mustelid we got from here on out, I'd actually be okay with that.

But I'd still like to see:
Tayra
Honey Badger
Eurasian Otter (or North American River otter) - just something for a non-tropical otter.

I wouldn't be unhappy with anything else since mustelids are one of my favorite group of animals, but these are the only 4 on my want list.

I personally think the yellow-throated marten outstrips the European pine marten in almost every way, especially when it comes to putting them into a zoo game. As well as being more colourful than the pine marten, the yellow-throated marten:
  • Is considerably bigger - a male yellow-throated marten is about 5kg, while the biggest pine marten is only 1.5kg. That in itself isn't a problem (we have many other smaller animals than that as habitat species), but it does contribute to other reasons why the yellow-throated is my preference.
  • The yellow-throated marten are one of the only truly social martens, routinely living in groups of up to three animals and sometimes up to seven. Pine martens by contrast are fiercely territorial, even in captivity - at least one zoo has made a big deal of being able to keep a pair together year-round. So with the yellow-throated marten you would be able to have more individuals in the enclosure.
  • And when it comes to the enclosure itself, the yellow-throated marten would probably end up requiring less space than the pine marten - despite being nearly five times bigger, the territories of wild yellow-throated martens are half the size of that of pine martens.
That's not even getting into the yellow-throated marten having a greater range of biomes and being more widely-kept in zoos globally. I just think getting a pine marten, which would require an enclosure the same size or larger than a yellow-throated marten, in which only a pair of animals could be kept, would feel like such a missed opportunity.

I'm going to list my favorite musteloids (also includes raccoons and skunks):
Essential Critters:
  1. Red Panda: I'm really happy they're in the game. These are some of my favorite animals.
  2. Asian Small Clawed Otter: They are adorable, and I love their whiskers. The large family groups are convenient for a game like this.
  3. Wolverine: meme animal that adds to 3 continents, has an interesting reputation, and has a pretty brown coat. I'm not surprised it's so highly requested.
  4. Sea Otter: Their little white faces are so cute! I love how they anchor themselves with kelp and crack open tasty shellfish. Probably not as essential as the other three that haven't been added, but I really like them.
  5. South American Coati: I like the warm brown coat. We have a lot of and are requesting more black and white critters, so I hope this one is chosen over the white-nosed. Still, coatis are cute enough that I actually would not mind if they added two species of them. SA really needs more stuff.
  6. Honey Badger: Cute, useful, and the source of some funny memes. I hope they show up in the game at some point.
  7. Striped Skunk: Taxonomically, behaviorally, and visually, I find skunks pretty distinct from other musteloids. While not as essential as some additions, I'm very happy to see them in the game. From my experiences, I've found them a bit more friendly and less scared of people than other animals.
Awesome Additions
  1. European Badger: They're cute. I like them.
  2. Martens: Martens are cute, and I would love to have some more arboreal species. While I think the European pine marten is more important right now because Europe has so few critters in the game, the yellow throated is probably my favorite. They are so pretty!
  3. Giant Otter: I'm glad SA got a critter. I actually use them occasionally, but less so since the ASCO. They are good additions to the game.
  4. Kinkajou: I like their funny faces. Some nocturnal animals would be nice to have.
  5. Black Footed Ferret: Ferrets are cute, and this is probably the most well-known, ongoing conservation project in my country. They're a little small, but I would like to see them.
Still Welcome:
  1. Eurasian/NA River otter: A cold-weather otter wouldn't be too bad. If we get NA's sea otter, it would make sense to go with the Eurasian river otter here. I don't really need one either way, but they could be good additions. The mink might be better for a European aquatic critter.
  2. Ringtail: I don't know that I'd miss them, but the NA desert could use a small carnivore or two. I'm mostly rooting for gray foxes and bobcats right now, but they'd be a good alterntate that's a bit more unique.
  3. Tayra: While I have other priorities for both musteloids and SA critters, these would be a nice addition to the game.
  4. North American Fisher: I really like them, but I can't say they're top priority. They're neat and pretty big. Maybe I'll start rooting for them more actively if support continues for several years.
  5. Common Raccoon: From my local perspective, this is a dangerous rabies vector that is in no way a zoo animal, but I can appreciate that it has a different reputation abroad. They are unique and have sort of cute faces. While I don't view it as a local zoo animal, I'm happy for those that wanted it.
