Hardware & Technical What Should I Upgrade Next?

Hey all! I'm going to be doing a major rebuild come late spring or summer but in the meantime I'm wondering if it might be worth doing some quick upgrades to my current, 2.5 year old rig...

Asus M5A 78Lm Plus Mobo
Athlon FX 4100 at 3600
8 GB DDR3 RAM
Geforce 550Ti 1GB Video

Currently I'm getting 35 to 40 fps in Elite with high presets at 1600x900. Would I see much difference if I got a 2gb video card, would it be worth overclocking the CPU or GPU? Should I just be happy with what I have?

Thanks!

Doesn't look too bad from what I see.

If the game is running OK without any stalling, then leave it as it is.

Do you have SSDs? Is your cooling OK?

You don't say which OS you use, but on a 32 bit system, that processor doesn't seem to recognise more than 3Gb.

You can wait to upgrade the whole PC or just buy a new graphics card (you can always put that in your new PC later).

Graphics memory alone is pretty meaningless, for example a 2GB 550Ti would give you exactly...0 fps more performance. This is particularly true at lower resolutions, which 1600x900 is.

No SSD's, all of a hard drive and I do not notice any temp issues. Running Windows 7 64 bit.

With respect to your question: What Should I Upgrade Next?

Get SSDs.

Put your OS on one, programs and files you regularly use on another. put stuff you don't use too often, (those family photos and the books you downloaded, meaning to read sometime, ect.) on an external. It will save resources. Reduce loading and you can get the stored stuff quickly and easily when you need it.

Also, think about installing this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speedfan.html

But if you do, come back here for advice on how to set it up. It's a great program but needs careful set up.
