What the Hell?????

I know that I was getting the crap blasted out of me with warnings going off and systems shutting down when I crashed the computer.
The anaconda with its mods has been a hard slog so far, as I have limited time on this between work. So with my meagre funds, I do not view it as a "relatively small rebuy cost".
Okay but my point was just that - unless you had no rebuy - then you wouldn't lose the ship. That was all. I thought you were worrying the ship itself would be lost and you'd have to start from scratch.

I have ED:H as I never warmed to ED:O.
I got out cheap (23 million) and was shipped out to the Redeemer, where I made a clean launch.
I do find manually docking the Anaconda somewhat difficult though due to its size and shape.
It really is a shame that this great game appears to be fragmenting.
I am trying to work out how to get to Colonia now.

Cheers.
If you want to practice neutron star boosting, try Jackson's Lighthouse, which is the closest one to Sol at 174 Ly. You need a fuel scoop to do it, and don't EVER drop out of supercruise while you're in the jet cone or you're gonna have a bad time.

Maybe don't do it in your Anaconda, either, because it sounds like you're sailing close to the wind with rebuys.

That may explain something. I have never experienced anything worse than the classic belly-bump when entering the station's portal in the past.
What really annoys me, is the fact that it crashed my expensive ship and as I was trying to dislodge it they told me that loiterers would not be tolerated. I was only in this mess because of their auto-launch malfunctioning.
You will probably have worked this out by now having learned the hard way, but the auto-launch will often disengage from the pad and drift across the entire docking bay, coming very close to the pad(s) on the opposite side in order to avoid other shipping. This is especially true if the port is busy and there is a long queue. The station will permit this (presumably because the controller is in charge of everything) and you'll get no warnings, but if you throttle up or otherwise disengage the docking computer while in this position you will technically be loitering over a non-active pad and you'll only have seconds to manoeuvre towards the core before you're in violation and subject to attack.

Technically all individual aspects of this are "working as intended", even the queueing system which can leave you stuck for literally hours at a busy station but in most cases will eventually let you leave. But in combination they can lead to panic and the results can be disastrous.

I have a advanced docking computer on my exploration Anaconda but I mostly use it for landings at the end of long expeditions rather than departures, because I don't trust myself to remember how to dock such a big ship manually after months at a time out in the black. It would be beyond embarrassing to lose a fortune in exploration data by getting jammed in the toast rack. When I do use auto-launch, I only do so at relatively quiet stations.

As a side note. The update seems to have removed some of my settings, so I am in the process of mapping keys and axis' again.
I guess you need to open settings and select "custom" in drop-down just.
It was no problem with settings for me though, however - always backup files before updates. Known bug for 10 years.

Also, unless you're particularly brave or skilled, avoid white dwarf stars when doing FSD boosts. Their exclusion-zone-to-cone-size ratio is much larger than that of neutron stars, and it's far too easy to get forced out of supercruise and into your worst nightmare. The relatively meagre boost they give is not worth the risk IMO.

If you do find yourself flying towards a white dwarf, be ready to throttle right back and pull away immediately on exiting hyperspace. With neutron stars you have a few seconds of flight time before you're in the danger zone, but that time is cut to almost zero for white dwarfs. I've only lost four exploration ships in eight years of playing, and two of those were to white dwarfs. The first because I got cocky trying to boost the FSD, the second because I fell asleep in hyperspace and flew right into one. They're lethal.

Here is a list of station enroute, none are more than 500ly apart, bookmark them, follow the route. BTW I wouldn't try neutron boosting in your Conda for the first time, practice in something cheap and disposable, make sure if you do it in the Conda you have lots of money for rebuys......so probably don't for now. If you dock at the station as you travel even if you get destroyed you won't be sent all the way back to the bubble, just back to the last station you docked at, so have fun and let us know how you go.

Thank you all for your assistance.
Here is how it has worked out so far thanks to all of your help:
I have made it to Gateway, so hopefully I can sneak back on through the week and keep an eye on those nasty Thargoids as I make plans to get out of Dodge.
I am still enjoying the game, as it is still great tie out (when it's not killing you). Sorry robbyp, it doesn't hurt to ask just in case, but I am over my frustrated rant stage ;)
If I get time, I will get a cheap banger and try the neutron cone thing. It fascinates me and I would love to master it. Thanks again for the advice.
I had more funds than I remembered due to a good return haul session before I left last time. That lifted me out of the close quarters more than I thought. I only remembered having enough for one or maybe two ships after the surprise today and as I was cautious of entering back into the game, I could not easily access my funds amount.
I will look up how to save my settings for ED, as (well you all know) it is a real pain trying to reconfigure so many axis and keys.
I will also look up the list that varonica so kindly supplied, as it is nice to not feel committed to a huge slog across the galaxy in one sitting.
I am also checking out the Discord Fleet Ship setup and timetables.
You have all been a wealth of courteous information.

Now I need to get my beauty sleep.
With a head like mine, I need all the sleep I can get :D

Cheers all.

Some very good advice on neutron jumps in this page. Also, as @Jack Schitt said, avoid white dwarfs at all costs for jumping.
Also, regarding bindings, make a backup of %localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings folder.
Then, go into that folder, and open the StartPreset.start file with a text editor. For users that don't have Odyssey, I assume it's the only *start file present. Inside you'll find one line of text, which is the xxxxx.3.0.binds file that has your bindings stored.

Make a copy of this xxxxx file, give it a meaningful name by changing the first part until the first point, open it with a text editor and on the second line:
<Root PresetName="VJoystick" MajorVersion="3" MinorVersion="0">
Change the Preset name to the name you gave to your file. Mine is called VJoystick.

What this does is: When you change the default bindings, the game stores it under "Custom". If for any reason the PC configuration changes (missing joystick, etc), the game messes with that "custom" file and you have to reassign keys. If you've made a change to the name to something different, the game will create a new Custom file and leave your original untouched. So once you re-plug the missing controller, you can choose your renamed file and be back in business.
For Odyssey users the files have a 4.0.binds extension.

Okay.
It really is amazing what is out there in the information field.
Looks like more research regarding travel, neutron stars and stations. I have watched videos on neutron jumps, but it is one of those unfamiliar things that border on terrifying for the uninitiated. Although probably quite the norm for the experienced.
Can it go wrong?
How easily can it go wrong?
Do you have to practice?
How do you practice?
Camping over in stations along the ways sounds great. But the Neutron star thing sounds like a rush.

Time for more research.

In addition:
  • yes, it can go wrong. Usually fatally.
  • never went wrong for me yet on ~100 kly or so
  • take care, and bring an AFMU
  • keep an eye out for your FSD health, each time boosting takes ~2% off your FSD health, repair (with the AFMU) when the FSD health approaches 80%
  • you practice by doing it
  • don't even think about boosting from White Dwarfs
  • the built-in route plotter (as opposed to e.g. the Spansh plotter) does a decent job. Advantage is that it will lead you to a lot of previously undiscovered Neutron stars (Spansh can only work with known stars) and you don't need to plot the jumps manually, disadvantage is that it might put in a few more refuelling stops than strictly speakling necessary.

Additionally: if you don't want to engage with the Thargoids ever (and don't mind playing in what will become a static Galaxy - no more community goals, for example), you might as well continue playing in the "legacy" Galaxy. Read the corresponding announcements regarding update 14 here (top three pinned threads currently).

Oh yes - when you are repairing the FSD with the AFMU, stop in real space before starting the repair process. You might be requiring new underwear otherwise, at least the first time 😁.

Main Menu -> Help and whatever -> Get Unstuck. Puts you in your ship into orbit. Works a treat even if the game crahes at startup when attempting to instance you in your ship on the ground.

It says it's only for on-foot and SRV, though...

Bottom line....

We got cocky and attacked the Thargoids with some reverse engineered guardian super weapon.... but our arrogance proved our undoing as we didnt think that the Thargoids would have already reverse engineered the tech when they battled with the guardians some milllions of years ago so....

They kicked our butts with it.

They then launched a massive invasion of the Bubble, destroying countless starbases and outposts, millions of casaulties... and thats just after the first 3 waves arrived ....

There's 5 more still inbound.

I am trying to work out how to get to Colonia now.

I don't believe jumping to Colonia is really as bad as most claim....
I can do 5000ly in just under an hour with my Jumpaconda....
So I think, with a few snacks on my desk and a couple of Pepsi's....
I could reach Colonia in about 4 - 5 hours...
Maybe 6 hours if I count for some breaks... as I might stop on some obscure world with a view, somewhere halfway... and sit back to watch some TV for an hour.
Or better yet, I'll take the Colonia Super Highway Space Bridge or whatever its called... as we did just build a buncha Megaships along a specific route for players to have places to dock at.

Its either Colonia...

Or maybe I'll head out to the Formidine Rift and help look for the Thargoid homeworld....

As there are theories that the Thargoid invasion forces may have originated from that area, because we're able to track their approach towards the bubble for the past month, and a lot of people have said their trajectories seem to track back towards that area.

Take the weekly FCOC carrier shuttle...

P.S.: oh and never fly without some rebuys / don't fly ships you can't afford...
I have had a look at the Discord site and noticed the carrier listings. But the manual trip by itself also sounds good, neutron stars and all. Still thinking about it.
I also never fly without rebuys. However, I have been down to one rebuy in the past, due to major upgrades and the plan was to change back to one of my smaller ships like the Krait if necessary. Luckily that scenario never eventuated.

Since I did a major update not long before putting my ship away "safely"? I had forgotten about getting lucky on a two way run between close systems, where I cashed up again. So, after waiting for an update to download and install, when I logged in with my "safe" station being attacked with warnings to evacuate ASAP, I thought "This shouldn't be too difficult". I was just going to launch of the pad and as I got toward the centre of the landing bay, I would throttle up and hit boost as I was exiting the portal and keep hitting boost until I could get into supercruise or hyperdrive. Well that was the plan anyway.
What actually happened, was as soon as my ship cleared the deck, it just shot sideways to the right and wedged me in some structure over yonder. Then the crazy woman on the speaker told me to not to loiter or I would be in trouble, The ship wouldn't move itself and I had lost some of my controls (presumably due to upgrade) and could not un-wedge myself. Then the shooting started and all I remember in that blur, was systems going down while I was madly trying to crash my computer.

I must say, after a couple of weeks away due to work, it did come as somewhat of a shock to sit back for a nice relaxing VR cruise through space, only to have all that happen.
One of the frustrating things is the lack of clarity on what to select when the screen of options comes up. As an example, I did not know whether to click on my ship or crew member, or just click on the redeployment button without sorting the others. And as we know, an innocent click on a button can lead to a less than desirable outcome.

All in all though, I got out of it a bit bruised but okay, thanks mainly to the assistance of the people on this forum and for that I am grateful.

Cheers
