No, Frontier Unlocked and the secret feature are separate from the Ascendancy update.
I used to think that the new feature is most likely going to be player-placed surface bases, but now I'm not so sure. Lately I've come round to thinking that the new feature can't be particularly big or complicated. It seems unlikely to me that FDev would have had the development resources to properly implement surface base mechanics, in between working on both the Thargoid war and re-tooling Power Play. I suppose I'm also scaling back my expectations in order to avoid potential disappointment.
So at this point I'm bereft even of mere speculation. Oh well, only two more sleeps before we all find out what it is.

Thinking about it, the secret feature should be: Flying Thargoid ships, with the help of Aegis and some bridge technology provided by Seo jin-ae after she recovers, finding out that the memory scan was two way actually and now she's in possession of all the Thargoid technology knowledge too. So, that once she has joined the roundtable, she can provide you with Thargoid ship access as a faction benefit. Just like it was in Frontier.

Being serious, as an original backer of ED along with many other folk here, I cannot deny that I am completely psyched about this new feature.
