What to do when my mic doesn't make any sound?

So, last night a CMDR invited me to voicom and I really want to be more social in the game. So I accepted and quickly check my mic bindings. I have a push to talk set up, and I pushed it, the icon updated showing that the mic channel was open. I could hear him greeting me... But mine made no sound. The dots on the icon didn't move. When I let go of my key it shows mic as muted again. I'm fairly certain my bindings are right, but ED isn't hearing the audio from the mic.

I checked settings in windows and the mic is on and working. Fully verified. and I even entered the settings to make sure ED was assigned to use that mic.

So what do I do to fix this?

FWIW, the mic is the built in on the MS lifecam. It's worked for me in other games for years.

Is there a setting for outgoing? I looked. I have the cmdr voice turned up; I could hear the incoming voice loud and clear...

Are you expecting to hear your own voice? I use the Rift, which works fine, but I don't hear my voice come back through the earphones.

No, I’m not expecting to hear myself foldback.

I’m seeing that the dots on the icon don’t move, as they do for incoming voice. And I could tell the other CMDR couldn’t hear me.

I have a new rift coming when it releases in a week or so. If there isn’t an obvious solution, I’ll wait to see if that just solves it.

Is that the Rift-S? I'd be interested to know what you think of it. I had it on preorder, but cancelled it when I realised that the screens are no longer OLED. But I'd like to know if the improvements elsewhere mean that doesn't matter so much.

Yes sir. I’ll be happy to report back. Reviews are saying is not a dramatic upgrade, but you do have resolution and “netting” improvements. Plus inside out sensors. It’s the product I was waiting for. This will be my first headset so I don’t really care that it’s not really a rift 2. Reviews are good so I’m confident.

Double check that you haven't disabled microphone access in the windows 10 (if you're using it) privacy settings.
Hmm privacy settings.... I don’t think I looked at that yet; thanks.

Other issue is there doesn’t seem to be a way to test it until I find another CMDR willing to accept my voicom request.

This.
Took me ages, especially since this was added by some windows update. Suddenly mic didn't work anywhere. You have to allow it for certain applications now.

I found the mic privacy setting but ED isn’t in the list and I can’t find how to add it. I even tried a couple other avenues I saw suggested on blogs for going through the add/remove programs screen to click advanced options for ED, but that seems to only be available for system app type things. Maybe App Store apps.
I did see Xbox in the mic permissions list; might all games be grouped under that? Also I realize just now that I’m launching through steam, which has its own voice settings that maybe I should check, though I’ve been a steam user for nearly 2 decades and never had a single problem with voicoms through steam before.
I guess that’s the next thing I’ll check when I log on next.

Update: I checked this morning; steam has no mic settings afterall. I don't know what could be wrong as ED is showing up in the mic settings for specific apps, but not the permissions settings for the mic.

I'm frustrated by how un-transparent this is, not giving me a way to test if my mic is working --or any settings to verify that's it's even using the correct device. I just disabled in windows settings the other mic devices which were an analog mic and line in input on my built in sound card. Even though they were listed as not being plugged in, maybe ED was erroneously using them? ...Even though windows was all set to use the correct one in all it's settings. This is bonkers and I shouldn't be having to think about it.

I have an adapter between the jack and the headset. Sometimes my mic stops working and I disconnect/reconnect that adapter and it works again (for a while).
