Newcomer / Intro What was my start system?

For one of the engineers I need to travel a certain distance away from my start location.

Now, I began ED long time ago and cannot remember what it was and find that nowhere in-game. Where to find that information?

Thanks

It's not stored in game for you to access, but if you work on Sol and go a few hundred light years, which is only a few jumps, above the requirement you should be good.

While I cannot help with your start position, if you use the right hand screen (key 4) and scroll down your statistics page it will show you haw far you have travelled from your start location.

If you started on an outpost in space, it was LHS 3447. (I think I've heard that some people started in Eravate, instead, but those two systems are right next to each other, so it doesn't matter in your case)
If you started playing after the Horizons season began, you were able to chose to start in space (see above) or on the ground with SRV-equipped ship. If you chose so, then it was Asellus Primus.

This may not be correct. When I started (in Beta, November 2014) it was not in LHS 3447 or Eravate, but a few jumps away (I will have lo log in to find it again). I know it began LTT

Yes, that is correct, but since Gamma and through out the release and onwards, the only starting point I know of was 3447. (And later the Asellus in Horizons)

I suspect the OP is attempting to unlock Elvira Martuuk. If so then OP should just head to Maia to buy the 1 unit of Meta Alloys for Farseer. I usually use a d class Hauler to get this done, 30ly jumps. This will unlock Elvira in the process, assuming the LHS 3447 start location and gets you two engineers for the price of one.

Could be Palin though.

Another method would be to check the inbox for the very first minor faction reputation change, could give the OP a good idea of his first movements in the game or at least jog his memory.

You need to be a Scout rank in exploration to get access to Felicity. I'm afraid you'll need to do more than just go to Maia to get that. :)

You'll get your scout rank from the journey there matey, assuming honking on the way of course. Trust me, I know I've not played anywhere near as long as almost all of you here but I'm very VERY good at restarting the game and picking up the pieces when I die! :) Unlocking Felicity is pretty much a weekly routine of mine. :)

You can also unlock scout by scooping up basic surface materials.

Edit: Add in the fact that 2.3 buffed exploration rewards, it should be even easier now. I read that it was just a 10% increase, but it seems much more than that from what I've seen when handing in data.

If the OP is a Kickstarter backer, he may have started elsewhere than the other players. For instance, my starting system was Cheneti, as my pledge included a random Imperial colony as my starting system.

@OP, perhaps, if you still have your logs, ED Discovery may be able to read those and show you where you were docked first.

If you play on a PC, its easy. Open up your oldest journal file in

C:\Users\USER\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous

just double click it and it should open with Notepad, otherwise use notepad manually. It will show you where you were like this:

{ "timestamp":"2017-02-22T17:24:23Z", "event":"Fileheader", "part":1, "language":"English\\UK", "gameversion":"2.2", "build":"r131487/r0 " }
{ "timestamp":"2017-02-22T17:46:20Z", "event":"Location", "Docked":false, "StarSystem":"Col 285 Sector VL-A b15-6", "StarPos":[-163.844,4.031,-44.906], "SystemAllegiance":"", "SystemEconomy":"$economy_None;", "SystemEconomy_Localised":"None", "SystemGovernment":"$government_None;", "SystemGovernment_Localised":"None", "SystemSecurity":"$SYSTEM_SECURITY_low;", "SystemSecurity_Localised":"Low Security", "Body":"Col 285 Sector VL-A b15-6 2", "BodyType":"Planet" }

Just as a practical experiment I'm about to do the Farseer/Maia run in my new D class Dolphin. It gets 30.27ly jumps which is around the same as a Hauler taxi. Just fitted an ADS. This run should unlock Elvira and Farseer on arrival at Maia.

Edit:

Ok, getting to Maia is enough to unlock Elvira assuming the LHS 3447 start. Logging out/in should pop her invite.

As far as getting the Scout rank for Farseer it takes just 130,000 credits worth of exploration data. For a bit of perspective here the Maia system itself is worth 59,478 credits. The run starting from Artume that I just took earned me 224,000 credits.

Pleiades Sector MN-T C3-15 is worth 163,731 credits!!! So scanning that one system as you pass by will actually get you the scout rank from a naked start.

Great information, thanks to all!

Indeed, since LHS 3447 was just around 50LY from current location when I logged in today this was probably my starting location. So I planned a route in the opposite direction from current location. A few jumps (and missions) later I sell a bunch of exploration data I collected on the way and bam: Invitation from Felicity Farseer! Cool :)

So, that meta alloy she is asking for is only available at a specific location (the mentioned Maia System)?

Anyways, I'm fine now. Just going along, collecting missions on the way, earning some money, dreaming up what ship to purchase next ... generally having some fun.

thanks all

Yeah you can pick up the 1 unit of Meta Alloys from Darnielles Progress in Maia, you'll have to scan the nav beacon for its exact location when you arrive. It's sometimes just worth doing a full lap for Elvira and Farseer.

When I re-start the game I'll build the Hauler first and then save for an advanced discovery scanner.
Then head to Maia which unlocks both engineers.
Then to Deciat to hand over the Meta Alloys.
Then from Deciat to Ngurii for the Soontill Relics.
Then over to Elvira to hand in the relics.

Then select a home system to hand in all the remaining data at. :)

Enjoy!

In general this is a good way to play the game, just let the game lead you, and don't be scared to think 'I wonder...' or 'what's over there?' or 'Let's check out this USS' etc. If it feels like a grind, change the approach. Missions are helpful to give rewards and let you work through the game mechanics. They were intended to be the guide through the game, so let them guide you.
