What was wrong with fire groups?

Evening all... o7

I'm sorry if this comes across as a bit of a rant, but I've not been playing for a little while (give or take a year and a bit)...

What I'd like to know, was who thought it'd be a good idea to put modes into the fire groups?... just out of curiosity? I was quite happy with my fire groups... certain modules only worked in Supercruise, certain ones worked in normal space. You could double them up, and the ones you wanted to work, worked when you needed them... what is all this combat and analysis mode rubbish? It worked absolutely fine before, even with the addition of the FSS and the DSS (which only work in SC), so why do we need to swap "modes" to use them?

I dropped back into the game after a year and a half hiatus to do the recent CG... I shipped stuff.... This was completed yesterday so I thought I'd do something else (possibly shoot stuff in the other CG?) and to be honest, I'm rather disappointed...

Again, I'm sorry for the rant, but I don't understand why FD has "fixed" a system that wasn't broken in the first place, and even with the extra utilities (FSS, DSS) why they now hamper you to get your guns out when you need them, cos your in the wrong "mode".

....Whew... rant over...

Please, can someone who has been playing the game a little more constantly than myself give me a good reason to why this was a good thing?

At least give us the choice... something in the Options to allow the change back to how it worked would be nice?

Fire groups are not well thought out. I'm still wishing I could have cannons fire with lasers with button one,
but only have the lasers fire with button 2 WITHOUT switching fire groups.

This could easily be fixed if buttons were assigned to weapons instead of weapons assigned to buttons, as
we have now.
X.

Or the existing modes exclude items that dont work in that mode lasers and scanner on 1 because when in combat analysis mode scanners would logically not be needed... but FD decide no because ....?

If you could have entirely separate fire groups for the two modes, or you could at least disable the "doesn't work in this mode" giant warning, then it'd actually be quite useful.

As it is it just means having the same number of fire groups as before and a mode switch to make the fire group do something useful.
