What will be the name of your ship?

I keep seeing a lot of people talking about the Culture series, so I have bought the first two books "Consider Phlebas" and "The Player of Games" and I will dive into them as soon as I have read "A song of Ice and Fire" series. I'm halfway through book three "A Storm of Swords" at the moment and things are getting even worse in Westeros!!

I have read the first two books of Stephen Baxter's "Xeelee" sequence, "Coalescent" and "Exultant" and really enjoyed them, hence my ship's name "The Assimilators Claw!"

I really enjoyed Stephen Baxter's "Space", and Arthur C Clarke and Gentry Lee's "Rama" series - Listened to on Audiobook while walking around the corridors of a brand new, empty school building at night! However the best book to listen to while alone at night was "Day of the Triffids" by John Wyndham! Especially when it was windy and branches were rattling against the windows!!

Brian :)

You should enjoy those two, they're both excellent. My previous Cobra III was named Clear Air Turbulence, as in Consider Phlebus (though I suspect that Banks may have borrowed that name from the album). My current Cobra III's name is well-known in Oolite circles, and may get ported to Elite: Dangerous - one fine day!

Mine will possibly be 'Mayflower the Third'. My grandfather was first mate on the Mayflower the Second, when they replicated the voyage of the first Europeans to settle in New England (1620).

This fun British Pathe video shows the ship setting sail. My grandfather appears briefly at 2:30, drinking a mug of tea.

Another big sailing-ship he sailed was called the Joseph Conrad, so that could be another option.

Ha! you think you have a good orginal one then...... Clear Air Turbulence, gone eh?

What about...Gunboat Diplomat.

Ditto on the culture ship homage. I'd go for Meatf*cker personally. Other non Banks related choices would be Donkey Gums, Christ Puncher and Quack Candle.

Yeah... I have no problem dreaming-up names for ships. Musical inspiration (ie album/song titles) often helps.

I know someone who used Gunboat Diplomat for a while. They changed it to Attitude Adjuster later.
This was one of Banks' best ship names, I reckon:

There's a boat in Brighton marina called Peperami. Always liked their ads, even if they taste horrible.

There's a boat on the Deben (it's in Suffolk) called 'Cirrhosis of the River'...

Not got a clue about my own tub's name yet... I'll give it some thought....

I am a huge fan of the ship names in the Culture series. Will have to read some more for inspiration!

Dito!....'Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints'... good one for a Pirate?

That Culture Abominator class ship was a real handful...

I think I may have to go down that road too. Reading through all the Culture novels again at the moment - finished Surface Detail a few weeks back. Best SC warship yet :) - his patter was fantastic.

I can't think of a better name actually than the Falling Outside - damn, wish I'd thought of it first :)

I reckon the known Sci Fi TV series an movies will be the most popular...!

Moya (Farscape)
Leviathon (model of ship in Farscape)
Starbug (Red Dwarf)
Red Dwarf (Red Dwarf again! lol)
Serenity (Firefly Tv series & movie of the same name)
Firefly (the model of ship n Firefly! lol)
The Liberator (Blakes Seven)
Tardis (Dr Who)
Nostromo (Alien)

Anyone remember the names of the spaceships in Space 1999?

Culture ship names for sure. Has Alasdair Reynolds come up in this thread yet? He is very good at names: Nostalgia for Infinity ...and so on.

As soon as I've made enough to afford the biggest ship in the game, I shall call it Thuktun Flishіthy. You won't be able to miss it. It'll be towing a large asteroid.

Quack Candle.
Chris Morris' Brass Eye?

And yes, the Culture ship names are great, very clever. I think my favourite has to be Excession, but then I haven't read the last two novels yet. On the shelf and all that. Excession goes into great detail on the ships, how they operate and think, and their technology. I think that's the one where one of the ships about to go to battle finds its parent and asks it to hold it's mind state in case it doesn't come back. Amazing read!
