What will be the name of your ship?

[Suggestion] Player Naming / Ship License Plates

Hi All

I've been thinking a lot about how player specific entities within the game can be named and customised and think that there are a few small things that could be considered for implementation that would add a lot to the players ability to personalise their character/ship in game and therefore increase the immersion factor.

In regards to player naming. My interpretation of player naming from the kickstarter is that we will almost certainly have a first name and a last name (as people have paid to be a commander Jameson). I think this is great, but think it could be made even better if a player could obtain a unique callsign based on reaching a certain level within the game (perhaps elite rating, or military ranking, or personal wealth etc).

Therefore they would go from Commander Joe Bloggs to Commander Joe "Ace" Bloggs.

This would help other players more easily recognise experienced pilots, as well as perhaps give newer players a small halfway goal to work towards en route to being Elite.

In regards to ship naming, theres already a thread or 2 on that, but I think specifically for ship designations (license plates), I hope that these are present in the game as with previous titles, but I would also like to be able to see perhaps some customisation in exchange for in game credits, or via some form of cash shop purchase to allow the player to apply a private registration plate to their ship (this should be in addition to being able to give your ship/s a name).

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to flesh these ideas out further? Or do you feel that they might be a bad fit for the game?

Oh God yes. I definitely want a unique reg no. for each hull. Or a vanity plate I can transfer. And I want to be able to forge it to try and conceal my dodgey past obv. :D

I think you will remember my name after I have helped myself to your cargo a few times :D

Only joking - I have no preference on a call sign / nick name ... If people would like this customization I am not against it as long as the name is scrutinized by FD as usual. (Commander Joe SmackMyBitch Bloggs for instance!)

As for ship registration numbers these shouldn't be changed and obviously unique, whereas the ship name can be anything you like (including duplicates - nothing unique about them) - again subject to FD's approval.

Like the middle 'nickname' idea.

Shipname and custom registration changes strike me as a good candidate for vanity payments funding the game.

Game assigns random registration when you purchase a ship and you name it with a nice bottle of Tibediedian Arnu brandy smashed across the hull.

But if you want to change it in the future there is all that red tape and paperwork that costs in-game or micro payment $$$. Similarly if you want a custom vanity registration that costs a premium just like in real life ... or if you want a Witness protection name and registration change to go dark or escape unwanted attention I'm sure there could be black market specialists who can meet your needs.. for a price.

In Eve all my ships were named as follows:

Ship Mk I
Ship Mk II
Ship Mk III

When I quit I was on Ship Mk XXXVII

:D

I don't see why I won't start again with a good ol' "Ship Mk I" again.

And for that matter, the whole idea of bumper stickers needs exploring too:

"If you are close enough to read this, jettison your cargo or be destroyed"
