What would happen if Frontier pulled support for ED tomorrow?

Not sure where people are getting this from. I don't recall anything like that. The only thing i recall was them saying they would make an offline patch.

"Looking further ahead, we're faced with the possibility that Elite: Dangerous will become unplayable if Frontier ever stops supporting the game and shuts down the servers.

"If it were ever to happen, we would be able to release an archived version of the game, including the servers, but of course this would not evolve any further," Braben said."

So it doesn't actually say you'd be able to host your own servers or they would release any of the code. It could be they archive what there is and bind that into a single player patch.

Not saying i don't hope they do release server side in full so we can host our own servers, but i caution people to manage their expectations.

Pretty sure these concerns were had when frontier came out in 2012 with the news of Elite Dangerous, and people were asking the exact same thing when it turned out online connection was absolute to playing the game, the response was IIRC "If and when we decide to turn off the online component we will be releasing an offline version of the game that can forever be played"

I would expect a period of grace to be fair, primarily to those that had maybe just bought the game, maybe with the desire to play online, surely pulling the plug the day or several weeks after would constitute a refund?

Anyway, we've got at least another 12-18 months to go yet, I would hope, before this becomes something to be concerned about... probably.

:)

When that happens and Elite doesn't have any successor/alternative, it'll be a sad state anyway.

Here is what David Braben posted on the forum about this:

We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down. That would also address the issue of how you preserve an online game for the future, from the whole 'retro' perspective.
