It wouldn't stop me but I did expect it and when i joined the kick-starter it was explicitly understood and clarified that it was part of the deal. I think it's something they cannot in good conscience walk away from and the fact that step by design step they got to a position they feel it's not worth their time and money making good on the deal is not a good enough reason.

So don't take my vote to mean i'm happy with the decision. I can still play online and i'm reasonably happy with the game. But Frontier have my money. They aren't getting the money from anyone else on another space sim board I'm on because for them solo offline is a deal-breaker. We need new customers to fund further development. This decision and the way it is being handled is not helping sell the game. i'm very unhappy that a company i thought might have some integrity has chosen to step by step walk away from a commitment and very unhappy at the way they are handling it.

I'm happy enough with the game to keep on playing it although it's feature-light at the moment. But the trust has gone.

As I said earlier in the RAGE topic, I personally dont give a damn about offline mode. I got negative rep for that so be warned that it is illegal to think so apparently.

P.S. I expect second -1 because I said so here as well:)

me too.
It seems to dissent from the pitchforks is a no no here.

I cant see the point in an off line mode.
I played elite on the spectrum and have had every incarnation since then and as online games became more available I dreamed of an elite type game online. Eve nearly did it but I hated the star-gates. Now I don't bother playing a game unless it has an online component where I can solo/coop/pvp. its not me against the computer anymore its me against other people. Ever tried playing snakes and ladders or tic-tac-toe on your own, quite boring.

Have you never played chess against a computer.
It can be quite stimulating and the computer never gets bored, never cheats and is quite relentless.

What I don't understand is, why do some people have a lack of empathy to those who desire an offline option?

Speaking personally, I don't have a lack of empathy for people who desire an offline option. I'd have liked one myself. What I do have is a lack of empathy for the people within that bracket who've decided the best reaction to this decision is spitting rage and fury and demanding refunds and campaigning to get other people to demand refunds and expressing a desire for the whole project to fail because they don't get their offline mode. It's important not to conflate the two. I've seen some angry and disappointed people who've still reacted in a reasonable, measured sort of way to this. Those people have made some good points. Then again, I've seen... well, the contents of The Thread.

Compare it to the 'non-consensual PVP' crowd - who've rather been drowned out by all this, it must be said - who were demanding everyone be forced to play in Open mode and, ideally, lined up in front of their gunsights, so they could "roleplay pirates" at the cost of other people's enjoyment of the game.

The two arguments might have merit if they're expressed in a reasoned and rational way. But if they turn into tantrums then people will lose sympathy pretty quickly.

Although I feel it is unfair and borders on extortion, I am prepared to pay extra for a true off line version.
I'd be willing to pay an extra full retail price for an off line Elite Dangerous to be released at a later stage.

I would like them to consider delivering an online mode that offers the gameplay but not the unconnectedness of SP offline. i.e. pausable, private galaxy, served up by the galaxy servers but with the state of the galaxy overridden for solo-private players as appropriate, and with solo-private actions not fed back to the shared galaxy either.

ISTM that this would be much easier and more secure than providing a full offline mode. It obviously wouldn't help people who are objecting because they lack a reliable connection, and it wouldn't answer the longevity issue, but it would still provide the game experience that many have been hoping for (though not me ... I will play in the unfolding galaxy, one way or another).

Oh well, I don't.give a damn about an offline mode either, other than that I hope they do it if/when they decide to shut down the servers, so have a +1 from another dissenter to make up for it. :)

Very good points, commander! Even though I was angry at first, I'm now feeling more disappointed and let down. I just can't muster up the enthusiasm to get excited anymore :( . But I wouldn't ask for a refund, or go out of my way to suggest one to others. I have a couple of friends who were interested in ED because of the offline option, and they expressed their disappointment when I told them about the omission of offline, because they both have limited broadband connections. I'm not sure of either will ask for a refund as both of them love what's happening with ED so far.

I certainly do not want ED to fail either. I want FD to continue with the good work they're putting into ED (which, I may add, has far exceeded my expectations so far). However, I do hope that, when the time comes for the servers to be switched off (etc.), that FD implement an offline mode so I can happily play into my dotage. :)

Nothing at the moment. Just concentrate on the game.

What would you like the people moaning about the #FirstWorldProblem of there being no offline mode?

I wish they would shut up and let FD carry on with the development of the game.

Well said. I thought this forum had moderators but I must have been thinking of another forum. If there is moderators then why are they allowing threads and polls like this and why are they keeping others open when David Braben personally came on to the forums the other day explaining the reasons for the withdrawal of offline mode. Its done, the decision has been taken and the main man at Frontier has explained the reasoning for it so people should just deal with it and move on.

If it was me and any more of these threads pop up i would close the thread and ban the person who started the thread permanently and contact their ISP about this. That's a bit extreme I know but these threads and polls and the people taking part are imo just spoiling things for the other users. Some of them are behaving like children who've had their toys taken away from them instead of mature sensible adults which is what I thought we all were.

Can you even imagine the backlash such a draconian measure would cause? Can you imagine the stories that would pop in the popular, and not so, press regarding censorship etc. That would be like pouring fuel on the fire. As long as folks aren't shouting obscenities etc. it would be best to let these fires burn out gradually rather than fan them.

I found this combination of sentences amusing from a self-awareness point of view!

Frontier filled their coffers by misleading consumers, the delayed timing is the icing on the cake. This needs to be redressed, and so far I don't think it has been. So in this forum and dozens of others, the stink continues.

I always love the 'I'm not bothered by it, so you're not allowed to be' crowd. Myopic or what?

I played Elite on the BBC and Amiga and enjoy the choice of open ended gameplay but just now I tried travelling to another star system and got kicked from the server so no more game.
I have also played Eve for several years and yes it did have its moments mainly after updates and I can understand Mr Brabens argument that for a reactive game it needs to be played online but I would like to practice or play off-line as the mood takes me and I do not think that this is a terrible thing to ask for as solo is only OK whilst the server is up and running.

Real Offline mode yes.
And that would be quite possible, the technical problems are not that hard to solve and to make it cheat proof tweak the randomization of the galaxy, problem solved.
I avoid online games due to moving around (no connection) and because i do not really like to spend my leisure time with griefer idiots, that is not enjoying a game.
Plus i depend on some company who may or may not shut down servers and walk away someday so the game would be over, like, permanently.
