What's point of progress bar on engineering level 5?

I'm engineering some plasma accies at Bill's place. I was already at level 5 with Bill before I started on the plasma accies so just needed to get through the 1st 4 levels of Efficient Plasma Acc before I could get my level 5's. Anyway I notice that after I get the level 4's out of the way and do my 1st level 5 - there is a progress bar at the bottom (see the attached pic). Why? Or am I still at level 4 or something?

You have already obtained access to grade 5, now you must complete it ... each row of hexagons is a level to complete, 1,2,3,4, and 5, grade 5 is the one that spends the most materials / attempts, I hope I have helped you

edit: once you have completed grade 4 in an engineer not discovered before, you do not need to make more attempts if you do not want, grade 5 will be available remotely

It's made to give that warm feeling of accomplishment, after you spend all those mats, to max out the solid indicator.

To paraphrase Napoleon, it's amazing what someone will do for a bit of ribbon.

Remember all the mats you spent getting to G5? Prepare to spend 3-5 times that many maxing out G5.
I think so far my best has been a total of 48 upgrades from min G1 to max G5. At about 50% you can expect gains into the thousandths place - 38.83 on DPS will go up to 38.832, not even enough to round up.

This is the part of engineering where four people held down the dog while the rest... let's just the poor pooch will never be the same.

I never noticed it provided a line indication also. That's why this game is doomed ... so much dev effort wasted

I don't see it as wasted - I saw it beta day one. Kind of hard to miss really. It even moves as you apply upgrades.
Kind of like calling a tachometer on a race car a waste of engineering.

I used to love how engineers would like you less after choosing an experimental. Even their greetings would turn less warm and fuzzy. Like, you can't force these things, a plasma accelerator is a thing of natural beauty.

Historically it worked differently, you have to progress through level 5 bar to get to the blueprints.

When they changed the engineers it works differently. I sort of liked the old engineer screen, you didnt who what you would get.... random results, it mean no two ships were the same.

Just how long ago did you stop playing?
Has been no 'favours' with engineers since I started in March 2018. (shame I missed that :) )

I forgot to say it too, you can raise the reputation with an engineer delivering cartography data at their stations, and some still need favors before discovering them, if you refer to that.
