Whats the difference between a NPC minor faction and a Player owner minor faction?

Curious as from what I've read the player owned minor faction seems to work exactly like a NPC minor faction and how you win over systems etc seems the same.

Is it just linked to a player with a custom name or is there more to it that I haven't read up on?

I used to run a few corporations in EVE and have been thinking of getting into the BGS or player faction for some similar game play.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Other than a name in the game. There are no perks. There are no bonuses. There is no ownership.

You push numbers to change states...and you can expand the group into other systems...where there is no ownership.

Righto so I can 'adopt' a current minor faction and help it expand and take over other systems etc?

It works better if you get a group of people together to support said minor faction. Co-operative gameplay can be quite fun. Besides, trying to move influence in billion population systems on your own is quite difficult.

yes, but it is a good start to pick some minor faction in some backwater low pop no traffic system, to try out whether te game play is to your liking, instead of rallying a group, getting your own minor faction into the game, and finding out after a month that you dislike playing the background-simulation ... i started backing a faction in my adder ... even managed 1 expansion! before a wing of federal bountyhunters moved in ...

Yeah I'm kinda out on the edge of the bubble and not in any interesting direction either with a small system etc.

I was thinking literally looking for a small backwater system with a bit of a fun area to have a go at this. At the moment my internet is awful so mainly in solo but I would want to possibly get a group together to assist my 'adopted' faction or if I find it is to my liking then possibly organise our own player faction.

I'll have a read of the BGS thread again if most of the essential info is on the first page :) I looked at the size of it and balked a bit.

Why not take a look at the East India Company and put in an application? We're based in Kappa Fornacis, and one of the bigger and more organized BGS player groups out there. Why make a group when an awesome one already exists? We've already made the top 20 largest groups, in terms of systems controlled, and rapidly moving up the list. :)

My plan is to have a look at player groups already out there first. Being in Australia (GMT+10) makes it a bit harder to find active people etc but thats what I want to do first yeah.

However.....One of the reasons I used to run my own corp in EVE was that despite being ex military I'm really bad at taking orders :) and the larger groups often ended up with all sorts of drama.

So I'm hoping to find drama free good people to fly with etc

To help in the search for a Player Group, have a look at the INARA site. Not all player groups are listed, obviously, but there are a great deal registered there. You can review their backstory and objectives. A place to get started.

Why not set up camp in HR 8444.
Population 9 Million but plenty of stations.

Or Elyu.

I hear Xihe is nice this time of year too.

Or maybe you could adopt the Kamadhenu Gold Drug Empire. That would be cool.

uh - just kidding guys - don't hit me.

You get kinda used to the way Elite Dangerous does procedural name generation, and you can spot a Player Faction.
Usually it's best to avoid systems where they are ruling.

[edit again]
uh - the system listed at the top is the homeworld of The Winged Hussars.
They made this video early in the Border Coalition stoush with Dark Armada.
Unless you can field a lot of boots on the ground - you don't want to start a fight right out the gate.

If you're into some epic RP sillyness with a serious competition on the backbeat - you really have to indulge in the Dark Armada thread.
Either start from now and work back or jump in from about page 16 and follow it chronologically. It's a must read if you're thinking of being an EVE style corporation.
The BGS thread is informative but kinda dry, cordial and collegial.

I'd add that The Dark Armada are getting their behinds roundly spanked. They show little desire for direct conflict, but given that the BGS is basically PvE, it makes little difference to us. We've given the Dark Armada multiple opportunities to return to the negotiating table and to return to the original treaty, which favoured them heavily, but the intransigence of their crazed leader precludes a settlement. We won't stop until he returns to the table or until his faction are present in no other systems but Checha, albeit at 1% with no stations under their control, not even a ground installation with no landing pads.
