General / Off-Topic What's the highest frequency you can hear?

In school, many many many years ago(I'm 34 now), our science teacher did a test, to see how high frequency the classes hearing was.

We were told to hold our hand up, and drop it, when we could no longer hear the tone.
All was well, the teacher was actually the first to lower their hand. Lol At around 15,000hz, people started lowering their hands.
20,000hz passed.

I could still hear it.
Most of the kids assumed I was just attention seeking, but at around 24,000hz, I could still hear it. Lol

The teacher than stopped the test, and told me I was lying.
Great huh? Good old "don't be ridiculous, you're not special" school teachings!

Anyhoo, a recent post about my PSUs high pitched noised, reminded of this test, so I just took a test again. Almost 20 years later.

Unless my phone, or ears deceive me, I can hear 20,000~hz still. Lol
Hurts like hell, and not the best test to do when you have a headache. :p

But. I have super hearing!
And ironically, I'm the worst listener. :D

There are plenty of YouTube tests to test yourself on.

Post your results, and your age (if you want).

Most PC speakers/sound systems aren't going to accurately reproduce very high frequency sound and in some cases will introduce artifacts at lower frequencies that can be perceived.

There are certainly some people that can hear higher frequencies than is common for their age, but I'd make doubly sure that the hardware is up to task before claiming anything too extraordinary.

Meh, to be honest, I doubt my phone's loudspeaker can accurately do anything. Lol

But, I can hear very very high frequencies.

I can also tell when any TV is on in the house, even if muted.
I can also hear phone chargers. Which is annoying, seems as I sleep about 5" from mine. Lol

Heck, I can hear my phone.

I also random walk around the house if I hear a high pitched noise and try and find it. I'm not crazy though. :p

Interesting. I stop hearing things at 15kHz, approximately, then hear things between 18-18.5kHz

But I think it's just my headphones.

I'm 47 and work as a sound engineer, I can still hear 15000hz at this point, I do the rest by numbers and a spectragraph.

Once convinced my dad to unlock the office (we were in the car park) to turn off a monitor. He wouldn't believe me but eventually did and sure enough a monitor had been left on. That was in my 20s.

But can still hear old crt monitors when they are on but don't have an input signal and some cheap power supplies (chargers). 45 now..

Well I can't hear shait, but I blaim the army for that :D

In theory you can hear up to 25.000, but most people are around 15-18.000

Can you repeat the question ?

Over 9,000.

I topped out at around 14.5kHZ. Too much time spent dancing in front of kilowatt speakers in my yoof, I suspect.

I try to vary the pitch, tone and frequency I talk at but my Mrs never hears any of it. Funny thing is I often get told by her that she told (well she says asks) me too do that days ago.
