What's the "lore" for the BGS shenanigans?

Hey, dude, I hunt G5 mats, too. And I know that there are G5's that are currently unavailable due to a lack of system states.

I also know that in short time those system states will be available again and I'll be able to go find the HGEs that I'm looking for.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other HGEs with farmable mats that can be traded for the ones people need.

That's true. In fact I've heard a rumour that there's an exploit that allows you to farm a persistent HGE by relogging until it expires. Though it's not well known, so it's not a lot of help. And while the USSs that do exist are relatively abundant and productive, they're not so abundant and productive that trading off their contents at 6:1 is an attractive prospect.

Still, if the BGS does return to the status quo ante, all this will soon be behind us. The trouble is that I'm also hearing rumours that the BGS changes are going to lead to HGE USS types being tied to faction state rather than system state. If that's true, the current rules and tools for finding them are going to be useless, and even after the BGS stabilises there will be difficulties for many until new rules and tools emerge. Which I daresay they eventually will, but in the meantime some of us are going to be left feeling like the Peters who have been robbed to pay Paul.

OP, I apologize for allowing the friendly discussion between myself and vindelanos to somewhat derail what was meant to be a light-hearted and amusing thread.

Glitch in the matrix. Don't worry, they'll recycle this batch of CMDR soon enough and start over with a fresh generation.

But if you think of it, a more elastic Galaxy should afford players more opportunity for mat gathering, given that every system will now have its own state. No longer will large swaths of space be in boom or war or outbreak or whatever. Basically, the increased variety might just be a great thing.

Yeah, same. I'm not trying to be all super serious or super critical of this thread in particular. I know it's just meant to be lighthearted. Still, I think some of the fears and rumors floating around are unfounded.

You need to be stroking some kind of space p u s s y c a t while your'e saying that...

:D

You've inspired me Vin...

So much opportunity, Goose :)

It's the spirit of 4Xmas that descended upon the galaxy.

Hopefully this is how things will play out - I've certainly considered the possibility that if the rumour about HGE types tracking faction state is true, which I don't think anyone outside FDev knows for sure yet, then you might not need to know which HGE types are where. Fly through enough random high-population systems of varying allegiance, hoovering up all the HGEs you find, and you'll end up with plenty of everything.

Fingers crossed. I'm out of the game till after Christmas, and with any luck the BGS will have settled down by then. I'm just not a hundred per cent certain that anyone outside or inside FDev knows for sure how long it will take. FDev have been known to misjudge things by an order of magnitude \cough station repair quantities \endcough.

If the reset does drag on, well - you and I will cope. I've more than a thousand hours in, and I'm sure you have more. We know our way around the game. But for the players who are still clambering up the learning cliff - sorry, curve - it might just be one frustration too many. And those are the players FDev desperately needs to keep if the game is to survive.

Can't rely on the established player base forever. I don't know how careful you are crossing the road, and I've reached the age where permanent and irreversibe decrepitude is no longer a distant prospect.

Edit: Ye Gods , I'm doing it again. Sorry, OP!

...and I'm seeing people starting to worry that Things Will Never Be The Same Again.

That's a given. Seeing how the BGS is at least a pseudo-chaotic system and the devs changed some of its fundamental workings, it's practically guaranteed that it will develop into something different than before.

Trying to make sense of the BGS reset from a lore or roleplaying perspective is a fool's errand! It's such a huge obvious game driven change it's just not worth the mental energy. It reminds me of all the logs that show up on Inara when a new feature gets released - like when planetside landings were 'finally allowed by the Pilots Federation.' [haha]

Hand wave it and move on. :)

Just in case anyone might think I was disparaging slash fiction in my OP, I'd like to point out that the mental scarring came from the specific pairing of Aragorn and Frodo, when my mother should know perfectly well that I prefer my man-action to be Stargate SG1 themed. Sorry.
