As a new player, I also don't want to spend endless hours researching about all the engineers I may find some day once I get advanced enough. Not to mention trying to figure out which bits I should hold on to dearly and which I could easily sell and get again later. My small ship simply can't keep enough to be helpful even if it is something valuable. It almost seems like they're not interested in getting new users, they're trying to lure the old users back.
In the process they're missing the mark for both.
As a brand new player, you may be right about ignoring engineers.
However, once you get to the point of being able to buy A-Rated modules (I don't see the point modifying anything less), the low level upgrades use relatively common materials so you can realistically gather those when you actually need them. It's mainly the high level upgrades than need rocking-horse excrement.

In the mean time, maybe you can think long-term? E.g. Submit your Combat bonds to Tod's station and submit Exploration data at Felicities station (Both only possible after un-locking them which is not that difficult). You still get the credits and rep-gains, but your status with those engineers is boosted too. So, by the time you want their services you will have access to the better mods (once you get the components).
.
Hopefully storage will be around by then as it was mentioned as being high on the to-do list in a recent live stream.

Currying favour is exactly what I'm doing. A 3 hour honk and jump exploration session (Advanced scanner a must for this) got me half way to Level-4 mods with Felicity last night.
