Whats the point of open play?

You are exactly why I don't play Open.

Could you please explain me WHY you engaged a newbie and stole his stuff? "I'm a pirate" is not an answer, I am asking the player, not the commander. Where's the fun for you the player? Zero challenge, no interesting reward. Game is expected to be fun, and except if you have an ego problem, I don't see the fun in slaughtering defenceless opponents, for nothing.

And I don't either see the fun in being slaughtered - the only think I can imagine is frustration, since that's what I would have felt instead of your victim.
I am discovering that game, slowly, the learning path is not evident for people not used to fly simulations or that kind of game, and playing with keyboard/mouse. I was intercepted once and wiped by a NPC pirate - I learned that galaxy is a dangerous place, and that the danger is waiting just behind that star. I knew "in theory" that I could be intercepted, I learned that it's not only theory and lost slowly-gained gold - it's part of the game, and I accepted that lesson.
What I wanted to say is that the galaxy is dangerous for a newbie, "we" don't need unkillable opponent at that stage of the game. "We" need clues, indications, advices on how to make our game experience even better, so that we'll grow and make more interesting opponents in the future for you. "Your" newbie apparently knew that he could throw his stuff in the hope to keep his live - I didn't even know that, and I would have fought you to my certain death by ignorance.

Leave sidewinders alone, they are neither rich or dangerous. They are just learning players.

You asked why players come to Open - it's because they want to feel that galaxy is not empty, because they are looking for interactions with non-scripted IA. It's because they hope to receive advices during their progression from experienced players, or to give advices.
It's because they hope to meet people with whom they can share their own experiences, and maybe "socialize" with them, and why not become friends with some of them.
Some also come to Open because they want some PVP, more interesting than any other scripted fights - you are part of these ones. But you represent a minority - vocal one, indeed, but minority. Most MMO players in PVE-oriented games are not ready for PVP, so they escape PVP fights because they are not interested in them.

Players choose Open because they want to play with other players, not because they want to fight against other players.

Relax I did not steal all his stuff as he needed it to complete a mission. took like 2 tons of cargo total.

Players choose Open because they want to play with other players, not because they want to fight against other players.

There is also big "Mobius" PVE private group to join.

I wont be either pirate, bounty hunter (or even fight for military) as long as I know my human opponent can just use exit as an exploit (even log back into same battle afterwards withouth me noticing it).

I play exploration in Open, not much risk from other players, but if I "chicken" (lets say I would have managed to get some magical data worth fortunes), at least I would have decency to save, and go to "Solo" just before I reach station.

I guess you are not going to agree with me on this, however i think you raise a genuine issue with this.

imo once a commander escapes you as the agressor should NOT be able to jump after the person and attack them again.... and again.... and again. That is just not cricket.

If you cant finish them off fair and square then tough, they got away, and i reckon this needs to be tweaked.

if a CMDR escapes legitamately i think it is completely fair enough if they then choose to DC once they got to SC.

I don't really agree with this point. Who's to say when I had a fair bite at the apple as a pirate? I'm in a cobra, If I interdict someone and they fail, I get 40 seconds to scan, send my "stand and deliver" text and wait for a response. If they submit I only have 10, not even enough time to scan them before they can run. Then, assuming I can keep them in mass lock range, I have 30 seconds to take cargo from a hauler, and 5 seconds to do it from a type 6(no mass disruption by a cobra).

Vs a hauler I don't/shouldn't need more than one bite but against a type 6 I'll need 2 or 3 bites before I can reasonably get any cargo.

Most of my first time is spent asking for cargo and scanning, if I can only get one try, why bother playing mr "nice" pirate? It would just use up my one and only chance.

I think these contests are a poorly conceived publicity stunt that will prove to be mistake and that any incentivisation to do anything in game should remain in game.

and you are welcome to that thought, but it has no affect or relevance to the reality of the situation that exists.

What's the point of play solo?

Indeed, AI can be just as well griefers, I recently collided with two or three AI´s (+1 near miss) when I tried to undock and dock again (for repairs, no shields in my explorer Cobra for range), I were very lucky not to die. Could have sweared it were intentional.

On top of that, after it all I got bumbed by AI as I were trying to land, so that I hitted station and died.

And this was all in Open (no humans on radar), there must be one circus going on in that station in Solo...
