As far as I know, the duplicate option gives you the next item as well, as long as it was a single item that you duplicated. If you selected and duplicated multiple items, you're right, then it doesn't give you the next items ready to place again. But the selection of the items you just placed stays, so you can just hit CTRL + D again to get the next set without needing to select items again (which can be a real pain sometimes).
The same thing is true for the advanced placement I think. Select one item and hit CTRL + X and it keeps giving you the item to place. Select multiple items and hit CTRL + X and it doesn't, but the placed items stay selected again so you can just hit CTRL + X again for the same selection in the exact same place as the previous placed items.
It could do with some streamlining so that the behavior is more consistent, and doesn't do two different things for the same action depending on how you initialize it.
