Newcomer / Intro When is a newbie no longer a newbie?

A newbie that knows that he or she is a newbie is wise. But still a noob perhaps.

That person is no longer a newbie when he compares his gained skills and abilities and realize that he is not the worst out there.

However: Anyone can be a newbie at any one part of the whole. A scientist may be a wizard on his calculator, but still a noob when it comes to love.

Also, a newbie question may be as profound as any question asked anywhere.

The question: When is a newbie no longer a newbie, is pretty profound and interesting. Not a newbie question in my opinion.

Summary:
Any one person can be a noob at any arbitrary skill or ability, at any situation. It is all relative to what is measured and for whatever reason.

Well, I am new to ED but not to the Elite universe. I know one thing though: I will always be a noob (or newb or n00b, I've always used those terms interchangeably).

My question came from wondering whether to post my questions elsewhere having played for about a month now. Think I'll stay here as everything I've asked has been kindly and competently answered

So, huge O7

I'm glad you were satisfied with the answers you got here, and weren't too bothered when we took things a little too philosophically. If you ask a question that's better answered in another thread I'm sure there'd be folks willing to tell you where that would be.

You're still having fun then?:)

I still have fun so I consider myself still a noob.

Whenever I land my spaceship in a particularly smooth way I still punch the air in success <grin>

I would say that EVERYBODY is a newbie where Elite: Dangerous is concerned, as there is so much and so many different things to do. I, for example, have done well at Trading (I am Elite), reasonably well in Combat (Deadly, but it has taken me three years to achieve), reasonably well in Exploring (Pioneer, same timescale as Combat), I have done some mining, but there is so much else I have not done I would have to ask advise on how to do it well. The fact that FDev are also continually developing and adding to the Game means that there is still new things to learn.

However, saying all that, you are no longer truly a newbie when you feel confident enough to do something different without having to ask for help. Yes, you could still make mistakes, but intelligent people learn from their mistakes (a motto I have heard is "Intelligent people never make the same mistake twice; they find a new way to foul things up!").

OP - you've asked a question that sounded simple at first, then as the answers came in my mind has been blown....or at least expanded incrementally.

I now understand that I am the walrus....

....but I'm new to it and don't understand how to do it properly, it must be bugged or broken[noob]

You need to complain about the game a lot more to remove the 'newbie' title.
You shall then be promoted to 'salty'.
With many hours of work you'll reach 'bored'.
After that comes 'Finished!'
Then..'Returned'.

do you know exactly how many complaints one needs to become salty? Ive been complaining for years and not made it to salty yet.

I think I stayed in here for two or three weeks before dipping my toe in Dangerous Discussion.

Exploration is a good board if only because most people out in the Black are doing it for a strange compulsion, not to gank or exploiting the latest cludge to make 1000 zillion credits an hour. In fact we are all hypnotised by the mantra of honk, scoop, jump.

Suggestions tread very lightly. I made the mistake of posting a few ideas in there but it got very sodium chloride very quickly. For every one or two who might agree with your perfectly sensible idea, there are thirty that don't and once the negatons start flying, any support tends to slink away. And I wasn't convinced that anyone from FDev reads the ideas anyway, some of the posts seem little more than alt-Dangerous.

I think it's a style thing more than a numerical one.

You need to cultivate a sorry for yourself whine, think of the things moaning to Churchie in the insurance adverts.

I've been playing video games since I was about 6, been playing MMOs since 1999 and I've learned that even veterans have to ask for help sometimes. You never stop learning, but I guess when you feel confident enough in your capabilities to understand the core mechanics of a game is when you stop being a newbie.

That said, most games' communities differentiate between Newbie and Noob.
Generally a Newbie is someone who is new at the game, not very good at it yet but is willing to learn. Sometimes Newbies get better by them selves by practice or reading articles and watching videos. Sometimes they ask for help or are given it freely and they learn from that advise.

A Noob is or is not new at the game and not very good at it, but is not willing to learn, they don't read up on the problems they might encounter, they don't listen to advise and they certainly don't ask for help. Most of the time they're adamant in that they are doing it right and it's the game's fault (by design) for them failing.

Of those thirty, twenty or so of them can turn any thread in to a which is better pve or pvp in two posts.
