Newcomer / Intro When is it time to get a new ship?

I'm currently at 90k cash and a 10 ton cargo sidewinder. All I do is trade for now, with occasional missions that involve cargo. What kind of death penalty will I look at once I'm in a ship that isn't loaned itself?

Side question: Do ships have different cockpits?

You want to have at least 10% of the value of your ship + fittings in cash on hand. If I was in your position I'd feel comfortable upgrading to a hauler at this point.

Side question: Do ships have different cockpits?
The interiors are indeed different from ship to ship, but the UI is overlaid on top of each one in the same way. So, yes and no.

insurance is (by default if you don't have any backer or beta discounts) 10% of what it would take to rebuy your ship and modules. You can check your rebuy cost in the right hand systems UI pane.

Yes ships have different cockpits. Not in terms of the projected UI layout and iconography, but they do have different cockpit views, different fittings. Faulcon deLacey tend to go for the "classic canopy" look, Zorgon Petersen build ships that look like a typical ford transit inside and have more of a "windscreen" type of view, Lakon go for the "bubble cockpit on the front of the ship" design. There are also more minor variations between different ship types from the same manufacturer.

Honestly, upgrade to a new ship whenever you're comfortable doing so. Some people like to make sure they can afford to replace it if it dies, some people like to stick with their current ship and upgrade it massively. Personally I just buy a new ship whenever I feel like it, if it gets blown up and I can't afford to replace it, then meh, I'll deal with it :p

The cockpits and interiors vary massively, yeah. Unfortunately all the other ships seem to have less visibility than the sidewinder, as far as I've seen; I love the window on the ceiling of the sidey.

vs the Adder:

(the interface looks strange on the second one because I turned the UI off for the screenshot. Unfortunately some UI elements go away and others can't be turned off)

Actually, on a semi-related note, the adder has a second seat; is there some sort of co-pilot or passenger system planned for future updates, or is that just purely cosmetic?

Yes you've got enough cash for one, especially if you trade in the sidey... I just spent a few days in a hauler and the only upgrade I did was to the FSD and more cargo capacity... took me a day and a bit maybe to get into the L6. The only thing to worry about is the lack of points for weapons.. so if you get interdicted, you need to wiggle that stick and get outta there! :D

It's more a case of "what do you want to do?"

An Eagle, Hauler or Adder are all good ships depending on what you need at that moment, or how you like to play. I would aim for maybe 120K before thinking about the Adder, maybe even 150K. The Hauler and Eagle are good with 100K.

And there's nothing wrong with spending the cash on upgrading the Sidey either - it's a good ship and very cheap to upgrade. ;)

I kinda did write I'm doing just trading ;)

I bought the Hauler, fitted a C drive and 2x8 cargo. Is the Hauler already not able to land on all types of platforms anymore? I'm at Levi-Montalcini (been a few times now) and I only get to dock on #4, the big one on the other side, and now I'm being denied even though #1 docking port seems open
