When should I jump in and buy this game?

I was having the same dilemma as the OP and eventually I bought it. Few weeks later I regret that I purchase it. After I played like 40-50 hours and then watched a video in youtube called something like "the future of ED", which to summarize was "we will do this, we will do that", I realized that this is not my space game, not at the moment at least.
I will come back when "planetary landings" is released, if released actually, because what we have so far is "we will do it" only.

So I would suggest to the OP, watch it in twitch before you decide. I do not think it's worth the 50 euro now. The state of the game now, in my opinion is a huge 400 billion star galaxy of boredom.

Why wait?
No, really?
It is not pay to win. It is not subscription based. It is in constant development (yeah, I agree that there are things which need to be fleshed out), but things are getting better with every update.
Instead of wondering if you should buy it, go buy it. Try it for yourself. Find your cup of tea. You have clearly done the research, and lurking in these forums for years you propably have a good idea of what this game is all about.

Want to make this game better? Buy it. Give constructive criticism. FD has proved that they read the forums many times over, but they cannot satisfy every costumer to even the miniscule of details. I like to think that they have a "the whole is more than the sum of it's parts" approach.
Buy it, try it, and if you are still disappointed, leave it, and wait for a patch. Then try it again.
That's my advice.

This^ (have some rep)

All I would add is to remember that people tend to post on forums when they have something to complain about rather than when they are pleased (although there are plenty of positive posts). The fact there are differing opinions and lengthy debates just show how much people care and love the game.

I've played the game for almost a year now and it has been fascinating to see how far it has developed. So glad I jumped in then!

This is the game in my head i was actually playing way back in '84 on the BBC micro! :)

Hello

I've been long looking at these forums nearly every day for the last few years (I don't post though). This has been THE game I've been waiting to be made since I played frontier on my Amiga back when I was a kid.

I played a lot of Frontier when I was younger so based on that I'd say definitely buy now. It provides much more than Frontier did and is probably the closest analogue for me. Now is a good time to familiarise yourself with the characters, the over-arching story of the Empire etc. Check the galnet archives to catch you up on what is going on in the galaxy.

Also, as you know from Frontier, it takes some investment to get the money rolling in and getting into a cash comfortable position where you can freely pick from at least mid range ships. So getting in now you'll probably be swamped with things to do, personal goals to aim for, stuff you want to buy etc... I've got a stack of untouched games vying for my attention but I still keep playing this more than anything else.

Edit: Also take this forum with a huge pinch of salt. Whilst some constructive feedback has been valid there have been numerous threads of nonsense from some people who, if you gave them the moon on a stick, they'd complain about the stick.

This question really depends on how much value the money for the game has, to you.

If the money is just your weekly beer/fun/pocket money, buy without a second thought. If its your monthly pocket money, I would also say buy it.

If you really have to think about spending the money, then I have to say don't.

ED has some fantastic elements to it, but all it does is promise a lot and requires a lot of imagination to cover the gapping holes. The marketting material you have probably seen from the kickstarter is practically defunct; this is not that game. It appears there is no intention of creating the game they marketed on kickstarter. No one knows what FD's current plan is because they won't discuss it.
