Find a group with a recent posting in our Xbox Groups section, or post in there looking for a group, stating the kind of group you want to fly with.

ERM, this seems a little like an LFG post, for which we have a Sub. And your request is more than a little vague.
You talk about 'factions'. Being new to the Forum, I have to ask, do you mean active player groups, or factions? Because there ARE plenty of both. Give us a clue.

A lot of them have disappeared to Discord. That's where Taco Corp resides....
I've not been as active on here, because reasons, but one of those reasons was DRX's 'exodus' to Discord. I have a love-hate relationship with it. It IS good at what it does. BUT, at the expense of activity here and in, the frankly-invaluable, INARA I've balked at that for some time. DRX, as some will know, is a VERY open group, and part of the comittment I made to people was exactly that openness - that ability to dip into whatever comms channel and get the latest mission info. That still happens in my group, and I've always been wedded to the idea of posting DRX's 'Open' ops (most of them) to anyone and everyone who might be interested in joining us, if not our group.
The slowdown in this forum (as I perceive it...having been stupidly busy and absent for too long) is partly down to group comms migrating, I THINK. And a more general ennui sadly.

I am looking for active player groups who are also an in game faction. I know I'm new to the forum but I'm not new to the game this is just the first time I have came here in search of something.

Most the active groups moved to discord I think...I dont like discord ergo why I just think they there...but whatever, go look at the sub forums if any are upto date. Might help if ye said what sorta group or faction yer looking fer ^
I am just looking for other players who are active in the game. I also learning how hard it is to find a worth while crew to hang with. There is a different platform/website or app for everything really take effort to find like minded people...end rant...for now

75th Rangers are active. We’ve got a club on xbox called 75th Ranger Regiment GC. Give us a shout if you want. In-game faction is Ryder’s Rangers.

Player groups organically developed in the early days of Elite. They are very similar to guilds or clans in other games. They can be small and simple to huge and complex to everything in between. Most have a page on Inara.cz, a popular third party app. https://inara.cz/wings/
In the game itself the only 'official' representation you can really have are Player Minor Factions. Basically, you ask Frontier to put a minor faction in the game with your name on it. Then you can play the BGS with that faction like any other. Instead of "Random System Blue Transport Silver Pirates Cooperate Group Interstellar" you could support "LiberalGuy's Burgers And Fries."
Discord is a messaging program that a lot of groups use to chat, organize, etc. It's pretty sweet and a major way to get involved. https://discordapp.com/
